Re: 2024 NFL Draft prospects
So those hybrid safety/LBs, they aren't so great in space for pass defense?
Also, teams like the Cowboys tried to use such personnel and would get trucked in some games.

Re: 2024 NFL Draft prospects
Did we just trade both our 5th round picks to move up for a RB?

Looks like it. But they did get a very unique RB - 221 pounds with the third fastest 40 at the combine who is also a good receiver. Power, game-changing speed, who can also catch passes - sounds like a good way to make sure CMC doesn't get overused.

So we now only have 3 picks remaining in the draft. Hope the next pick is another OL selection.

They have two good RBs behind CMC and they still barely took him out to restSamurai wrote:CrimsonCrew wrote:Did we just trade both our 5th round picks to move up for a RB?

I am dumbfounded. We only take one lineman in the draft but take a wr and rb in the 4th?

It seems they have a list of guys they like, a BPA list that they don't seem to deviate from. Seems need is low on the list or lower than BPA

Re: 2024 NFL Draft prospects
I love how every year everyone is pissed at who we picked
We have a roster crunch this year as it is, trading two 5ths while still keeping the last 4th round pick is totally fine. There was a run on RBs going and they clearly love the guy. He is very fast, was recruited as a WR so he can catch passes out of the backfield. Having both him and CMC in the backfield on plays will be very interesting
Another WR is questionable considering the WR room we already have but he looks like another playmaker they can use in a lot of ways

Re: 2024 NFL Draft prospects
I'm pissed because this team was a decent OL away from winning a SB. That's not a question or fan theory, it's a fact. Instead of addressing a clear need like other teams (Philly, DET), they pick depth picks for areas they don't need, and may not even play. They picked a 4th depth piece in a WR and RB.arich35 wrote:I love how every year everyone is pissed at who we picked

Knew Shanahan would love Guerendo. Size and athletic scores are elite. Deep injury history though.

lol what are you guys dumbfounded about? if you guys don't understand Lynch/Shanahan draft philosophy at this point that's your own problem. they like to invest more in skill position guys while going cheaper/developmental route on the OL.
you can disagree with that philosophy, but it's pretty obvious at this point.

Re: 2024 NFL Draft prospects
6th round pick, OL Jared Kingston. 5th year senior, played RG and has experience at RT. Two OL we got have some versatility

Not great arm length for a OT, most likely a guard or centerarich35 wrote:6th round pick, OL Jared Kingston. 5th year senior, played RG and has experience at RT. Two OL we got have some versatility

Re: 2024 NFL Draft prospects
So I assumed the Niners would be eager to draft an OT in a draft known to be filled with very good OT prospects. Instead they draft Puni, a versatile OL but his size makes him best suited for a G, and Kingston, if he makes the roster will likely be either as a G or will need to learn to play C. So it would seem that the Niners don't view OT as a weak link, believe that the guys drafted as a G can learn to play T, or they will be looking for a veteran to play T. With question marks across the line except for Trent (who will be 36 when the season starts), I hope they have enough horses to give our OL the upgrade it needs if they want to win a Super Bowl before the cap comes crashing in next year.

Well the value just wasn't there at #31. I wanted DeJean or Newton at #31 in the moment but the more I see/hear about Pearsall the more I like him. It seems like we were set to take Rosengarten in the 2nd round but the Ravens took him right before us, so we traded back with KC because we didn't want Suamatia. Then we took Puni in the 3rd, who seems to be a guard in the NFL but put up some really nice pass-blocking stats at Kansas. A lot of the draft guys have been saying that the depth of this draft wasn't very good because NIL and the Covid exceptions have incentivized/allowed the fringe guys to stay in school longer, so any other OL we drafted would probably just be a depth piece. I think the front office thinks about our OL like this:
LT Trent - Still elite, we'll probably have to address his replacement via a first round pick/trade (like we did with Staley) when the time comes
LG Banks - struggled down the stretch of the season but was playing well before his injuries. I think they're counting on him returning to early season form.
C Brendel - Just OK but knows Kyle's offense and is liked in the building. If someone outplays Feliciano at RG, maybe Feliciano takes over at C.
RG Burford/Feliciano/Puni - the ideal scenario is that Puni really impresses in camp and takes over this spot, in which case Feliciano maybe moves over to C and Burford is a depth piece. If Puni isn't ready, Feliciano is the starter.
RT McKivitz - He played better down the stretch of the season (opposite of Banks) and was serviceable. Had we taken Rosengarten, those two would have competed, with Rosengarten maybe being the heir apparent to Trent.
It sounds like the opportunity to trade up in the first round to take one of the top tackle prospects just didn't materialize. Given Brock's new deal and the amount of roster turnover likely coming down the pipe in the next 12 months, we're not really in a position to give up premium future picks to make an aggressive move up in the first round like that. It's a tough pill to swallow because we're still supposedly all in on a Super Bowl in 2024, but I wouldn't have liked if we traded the 2025 first plus maybe more to move up from 31 to the Top 15-20 for Fuaga or Fautanu. I liked Barton but I'm not sure we should be trading future picks to move up for a C/G either.
