At least we hit the FG.
Another issue with the offense is defenses seem to be defending it differently this season.
Aiyuk alluded to it sometime last week and we've seen the stats with how much Purdy has seen 8 man coverages 2x higher than any other QB. Add to the fact that YAC is rock bottom and it's starting to make more sense.
I believe defenses have given up blitzing Purdy and the 9ers since they've been successful at beating it. It's similar to what I've said for years in that the defenses that stall Shanhan's offense are the ones that can consistently win rushing 4 and play tight coverage giving the QB nobody open to throw to and no time to wait for someone to get open.
Sitting in my armchair DC I'm minimizing the amount I'm blitzing since Purdy is going to consistently beat it for easy big gains. I'm rushing 4 because I know their offensive line isn't good enough to completely stonewall them consistently. Not only am I putting 7 or 8 guys in coverage I know Shanahan loves the middle of the field so I'm focusing on clogging that up and even if they do catch the ball we got so many guys in coverage we can get them on the ground before they can get any major YAC.
Now it'll be interesting to see how Shanahan adjusts and counters because almost the entire passing game is almost entirely built around scheming guys open down the middle of the field and giving them space to get YAC. Everyone for the most part is a possession-type WR except Aiyuk sorta who can actually run the route tree to get open.
A good discussion of an adjustment they made yesterday. They threw more deep balls than I can remember seeing anytime recently.
