Preseason Observations

Probably don't need a thread for each preseason game, but one covering all of preseason sounded like a good idea.

Anthony Dixon looks really good, if this first preseason game is any indication, the 49ers may not miss Glen Coffee

The defensive depth has looked relatively good.

From what I saw Iupati seemed sweet but Anthony Davis had a rougher outing.

Iupati looked incredible during training camp. We should be seeing good things from him for years to come.

Alex Smith looked like a scrub out there, but that's not surprising since he was going up against the Colts 1st team defense.

He didn't look great, but he wasn't exactly helped by the Good Hands Brigade.

(Here's hoping that isn't the anthem for the season.)

Not excusing him...he looked meh...but no one caught anything other than those put right there, and he lost on all the 50/50 passes.

Alex Smith looked a lot better this week even without Gore, VD, and Crabtree.

Personally, I'm not worried about Alex. He showed competence last year, actually showed a step above competence at times. I've trained myself not to expect anything more than competence out of Alex, so he shouldn't dissapoint me. As much as I hate the term, all the team needs from Alex is to be a "game manager". Don't turn the ball over, make a couple throws to move the chains, use his athletic ability to evade pressure, and convert red zone opportunities.

I'm liking Dixon a lot. This is the first year in awhile I like the RB depth after Frank.

I'm still not super confident in the O-line. But with 3 very recent 1st round picks up there, the unit sure as hell better start becoming overly solid.

I'd still like to have that 2nd wideout. Its quite clear Morgan is much better in the slot, and Ginn is nothing but a situational deep threat.

The thing that still concerns me most is the secondary. Fortunately Frisco's schedule doesn't feature many high octane offenses. But I do expect the secondary to get carved up by New Orleans, Green Bay, San Diego, and possibly Philly. A Warner/Boldin-less Zona no longer concerns me.

All in all, Frisco should have a good year and earn a playoff birth.
