The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday the signing of QB Troy Smith to a one-year deal. In order to make room for Smith on the roster, the 49ers have waived QB Nate Davis.
Smith (6-0, 217), formerly a fifth-round selection (174th overall) by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2007 NFL Draft, has appeared in 14 games (2 starts) during his three-year career. He has completed 48 of 89 pass attempts for 558 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a quarterback rating of 79.7. Smith, who is 1-1 as a starter, has also registered 109 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 29 carries.
Smith, a 26-year old from Cleveland, OH, starred collegiately at Ohio State, where he won the 2006 Heisman Memorial Trophy and led the Buckeyes to the 2007 BCS National Championship Game. He was also the first starting quarterback in the school’s history to win three straight games against Michigan.
Smith attended Glenville High School in Cleveland, OH, where he played alongside his future Ohio State and 49ers teammate WR Ted Ginn Jr. The Buckeye was also a college teammate of 49ers T Alex Boone (2005-06).

Tons of potential, but Singeltary made it seem like he just wasn't putting in the effort. Good luck, hopefully he stays with the practice squad.

Lateral move. Just 3rd string for another 3rd string.

NOOOO! Nate Davis looked good to me. Sure it was against backups, but isn't that all you want in a 3rd stringer?

I liked what I saw in Nate Davis, I expect he'll be picked up by another team

I really hate this move.

They drafted him knowing he was going to be a project, and they pull the plug after only one year? Apparently Sing said he wasn't putting in the necessary work. Sing would know better than anybody, but Davis couldnt have been totally going through the motions. I mean dude actually showed promise and looked good, every time I seen him on the field. Even considering the caliber of defense he was facing, he had to be putting in effort or else he would have been totally destroyed out there.

I don't think Nate was the QB of the future or anything like that, but I do think he could have developed into a useful backup. I also think Raye could have created a wildcat package for Nate, and utilized that angle as early as this season.

Troy Smith is a likeable guy, but he isnt much of a player. At least Nate has some upside.

^ Good, that makes me feel a little better.

I'd much rather Nate be on the 53 man roster, but at least he's still with the organization and Frisco can continue to develop him.
