Worst case scenario right there. At least he knows the Harbaugh offense and I would guess he trusts him. I read he threw like 48 td's with one pick in college but am to lazy to verify. Use him as a bridge until Kaep is up to speed.

IMO worst case scenario, is caving and giving Alex a long term deal.

But yeah, only have to survive for a year while Kaep is getting prepped. Johnson would be a somewhat smooth transition, due to familiarity. Plus, he would only have to be game manger, because thats all Alex is. Even if Alex is brought back there will be an adjustment period due to the revamped receiver corps. I'm not convinced Johnson would be too steep of a downgrade from Alex (if any), and one could argue Josh has more upside. I just don't think Alex is all that crucial.

Either way, not gettin Peyton could mean that Frisco is now again considering making a move for Mike Wallace. Wallace would be a massive upgrade for this team, and if his contract is reasonable he is worth giving up #30 for IMO. However, if Alex returns Wallace's impact potential would be limited due to Alex's inability to throw a guy open or go vertical. Same with Randy Moss for that matter.

We're not going to pick up Mike Wallace. We currently have Manningham, Moss and Crabtree as our top WRs. Then you also having a bunch of others trying to make the squad + WRs from the draft that could slip. Plus we'll also have to draft a KR/punt returner and that will use up a roster spot.

Cox can return kicks. Not sure how great he is but i heard he definitely has potential.
Moss is still a maybe in my opinion as to whether or not he will be on our final roster. I could also see the Niners trying to trad Crab if they could get Wallace for fairly cheap.

Not sure this is the worst case since getting Johnson is no guarantee yet either. Also, we don't know how Kaep will develop. I'd like to believe he will be ready soon but who knows.

Has anyone actually seen Johnson play in the NFL? Everyone seems to think he is a great option for this team that was one play away from the superbowl last year. His stats aren't that good (except for 2010 when he only attempted 16 passes). He is still young and obviously played well for Harb in college but that doesn't mean he will be great for us.

In my opinion if we don't resign Alex then we are in a lot of trouble. Of course if Alex doesn't come back then he is really dumb.

Alex will be back. The Dolphins signed David Garrard today, and with Matt Moore also on the roster, it wouldn't make sense for them to throw out a $24-$30 million deal to Alex Smith. He'll be back in SF soon.

It looks like the Niners have offered Smith a 3 year $24 Mil contract

They offered that deal before this whole Manning drama when started. Smith just hasn't taken it yet.

So Smith is signed. What's next?

I think we need a right guard first. Leonard Davis and Geoff Schwartz have both visited. My understanding is that Davis is a better prospect but I haven't honestly looked into either of them.

After a RG I would focus on Ted Ginn. I think he can still make an impact as a WR and obviously he is a great ST player. If he comes back I think we are the team to beat. Our ST separated us for the good up until the last game. Obviously. I heard we offered him a 3 year 7 mil deal. Hopefully he takes it.

I'm not sure what other players are out there that could make a difference. I heard we were looking at Brandon Jacobs. I wouldn't mind him as a backup to Gore.

And they signed Josh Johnson who I believe is a great backup to Smith. Knows the offense well and is a very good athlete. Gives us some insurance at QB and allows Colin one more full year to develop. Now we need a guard and then depth and we'll be cool. I am assuming they use a first or second on a lineman and then take a wideout. We could use some depth on the line and can always use secondary help. The team is coming along nicely if Randy can play. Still a little worried about Mario as he was pretty ordinary all of last year though.

Agreed. Johnson is a great backup option and adds competition at the QB spot. I don't know how he has developed but I know Harbaugh said he was the best athlete he coached. I think Smith is our starter but he can't slack off for sure.
Now we REALLY need a rg.

Manningham signed a 2 year 7/3 mill with only 2 mill guaranteed. Great deal at that price

I like the new acquisitions; I can't wait to see if Randy&Mario can help contribute to an already solid team. I guess we'll see if Moss has fuel felt in the tank.
