Culliver playing like dumb sh*t

Post#1 » by and1GS » Thu Feb 7, 2013 5:23 pm

Chris Culliver had one of the worst games by a corner in recent memory, and certainly stunk it up in the playoffs, so what happened to him? During the season he was automatic in defending deep balls, seemed like one of the best in the league at it, but in the playoffs he got torched time and time again and showed his immaturity.

However, one thing that screwed him quite a bit is that when we would drop into our nickel package Carlos would take the slot receiver and Culliver would be left on the #2, usually a big possession receiver. This doesn't excuse the play to Jacoby, but it does raise some questions on how the coaches tend to rate Carlos ROgers at this point.

Back To Cully, this all kinda goes back to a hit before the playoffs IMO, where DaShon was about to body slam a guy for a loss and Culliver came in and spear headed him. He's an immature player and has a lot of growing to do (wouldn't expect less from a former Spurrier player...), but I think the question now becomes: should he do that growing with the Niners?

Earlier in the season, we were able to bring pressure or stop the run without having to bring extra players up in the box. Not exactly sure on those long pass plays in the SB, but weren't we playing a lot of 1 on 1 man coverage on their WRs?

Mostly, ya, but we've always done that. He didn't have help over the top which is an issue, but when you're giving your man a 15 yard cushion, you need to stay with him. With that big a cushion the only thing you're really defending is the deep pass.

Well yeah, we were able to do that because we were bringing pressure with Aldon Smith. After he got his 19 1/2 sack, he didn't have another in 6 games. I wonder what our sack total was after Justin Smith got hurt in the Pats game...

Culliver had a terrible game, and even worse week. He was directly responsible for a handful of plays that if any single one of them had a different result, San Francisco likely wins the super bowl.

Not liking this guy much right now.
