What substance? Booze isn't a controlled substance under the NFL policy, is it? It'll be interesting to what happens with Irsay, who was DUI and prescription pills. I'm sure we'll see the National Consistency League strike again.

don't expect much to happen with irsay, punishing your employees is different than punishing your boss. they'll still figure something out to save a face but nothing severe

Don't know if this has been addressed yet, but does the 9 game checks Aldon isn't making this year still count against the cap?

Honestly this suspension is pretty justified. Aldon had done way too much. He's no saint.

The only reason it sucks is cuz of the rAy rice **** up. Goodell is bad. Very bad.

I'm assuming it does, since Aldon Smith is still getting paid, but is losing his game checks to the league due to the suspension.

Niners will save around 1.2mil in cap spac, according to this article (I have no idea if it is accurate): http://www.ninersnation.com/2014/8/29/6 ... salary-cap

Florio thinks a reduced suspension is still possible. That kind of makes sense if you think about the fact he can participate in team activities. He won't need much time to be game ready if he's with the team. Not holding my breath but six or seven vs nine would be a huge win.....

@TroyVincent23: No arbitrary suspensions by @NFL. They're for on-field conduct OR conduct detrimental to integrity of, or public confidence in, the game

@TroyVincent23: Suspensions under @NFL’s personal conduct policy are subject to a STRICT PROCESS agreed to by the players union @NFLPA and @NFL

This is a blessing in disguise.

1. First 9 games isn't that hard of a schedule
2. Lemon will now get his (and prove that he's a force as a pass-rusher)
3. Niners save 1.2 million against the cap
4. Niners don't play Seattle 'til week 12.

...I did find it weird they gave him 9 games instead of 8. Oddly enough that 9th game is at New Orleans, who is the darling of the NFL still for some stupid reason. Would've been nice to have had him back in order to put punk*** Drew Brees on the ground, but I still think the Niners can take 'em. Brandin Cooks will be tough though; I think he's going to be their best receiver.

I suppose you could add fresh legs to that list as well as he won't have the wear and tear of playing half the season on his body so he should be a monster coming back and well into the playoffs.

So Gordon is expected to have his suspension reduced to 8 games after this policy being changed... While Aldon still gets 9?? Anyway his gets reduced at all?

His wasn't the drug policy. I don't see that having any effect on Aldon.

Though frankly, Gordon shouldn't have his suspension reduced due to sheer stupidity. And he should potentially see additional time due to picking up a DUI while suspended.

They are reducing the DUI punishment to 2 games instead of 4 for the first one. No punishment if you are arrested for DUI. Have to be convicted. So Aldon's first one was dropped to wreckless I believe.

Oh, I didn't realize there were going to be changes for DUIs. Not sure it will make a big difference. A "wet reckless" is effectively the same as a DUI in CA. It counts as a prior DUI for sentencing purposes.

Does this mean Aldon can't get a reduction on his suspension?

It was in Florida the first time.

That's right. Well, we'll see. I wouldn't hate it if we got him back a little earlier.
