Agreed. I'm tired of people arguing that the consumer is obligated to tip because restaurant staff wages are so low and they rely on tips to live. If the industry is broken, don't ask the consumer to make up for it out of the goodness of his/her heart. Fix the industry from within the industry.

If you provide a service, it should be more than adequate, bar none. And yes, tips are earned. Some people are just not cut for a customer service oriented field, yet they somehow find their way to it. Hell, even healthcare whether you're a doctor, nurse, physical therapist, manager, etc is based on a form of customer service.

I tend to be pretty generous on tips especially in San Fran where the tip rates go at 18, 20, and 25%. However, if service blows, they'll know it by way of their tip (or lack thereof) and their manager.

I don't go by the 15% rule, I give a tip that is earned. If my service is great then I give a tip to match, I've given over 30% several times to great servers. If the service sucks then the tip will suck. You get what you earn, I'm not going to pay someone 15%if they didn't earn 15%.

There's a place that my sister used to work at that gave all the tips to the owner's son. The other waiters/waitresses were ok with it because they got regular minimum wage, not what restaurants can give (lower because of tips). That's dumb because the restaurant's hours are only during real eating time (not down time) and you'd make more than the 3 or so difference in tips. When I went there accidentally and realized mid-dinner that it was her restaurant (she quit before then and I had never gone before), I asked the waiter to come outside for a second and gave him a cash tip asking him to keep it) and then put "Manager keeps tips" on the tip line, writing the total without tip very obviously and took a pic of it. Checked the credit card a few days later and it was ok. I won't tip if I know it doesn't go to the wait-staff or kitchen or busers/hosts. But how often would any of us know that? Never unless someone we knew worked there. Frustrates me.

I used to see calculations at the bottom of the check saying, "For your convenience: 15% = XX.XX. 18% = YY/YY. 20% = ZZ.ZZ." Today, I saw: "18% = XX.XX. 20% = YY/YY. 25% = ZZ.ZZ." It was a regular restaurant, not a fancy one. One day, it'll say, "20% = XX.XX. 24% = YY/YY. 28% = ZZ.ZZ."

What? Are these waiters' QBs?

The stupidest argument I've heard multiple times for tipping (I've heard dumber single times) is: 10% for lunch and 15% for dinner.

Why? The waiters do the same thing. They (sometimes) sit you, take your drink orders, food orders, refills, box your left overs, etc. Now, you might say, dinners are bigger than lunch and dinners have dessert and appetizers... Ok, but isn't that reflected in the higher total bill. Remember, it's a percentage.

Someone complained to me saying that if they order a steak or a hamburger, the waiter still just brought a plate to their table. Why does he get more because the plate cost more? Got me. Note, the hypothetical was at the same establishment, same waiter, not comparing TGIF to a fancy restaurant, not that that matters so much (yes, I know, they have to act more proper, competed for the job by years of service presuming fancy restaurants hire the best, yada, yada, yada).

So, doesn't wait to take their drink orders, which to me indicates he was impatient.

I went to the fair today with my kids and saw a donut vendor cart. I went up to it and it was empty of customers. The three sitting there were walking around as if doing something. The guy nearest to the cashier register said out of nowhere. "Then, I guess, I'll just fill it up with coke." I hadn't ordered anything but thought he was talking to/about someone else. Then, he said, "You've got to speak up" looking back at someone else in his work place. The others weren't looking and didn't respond. Then, he said, "coke it is." He seemingly looked at me while he was busily doing something that looked like preparing for someone. I stood there for almost a minute waiting for someone to say, "one second" or try to take my order. I couldn't tell if they were dicking with me or were actually busy. I suppose someone not present could have made a big order. But they weren't doing anything. It was like lifting the donut pan an inch or two (but never leaving the oil) and putting it back. Moving a drink lid from one spot to another.

I walked away. I've been in awkward situations where I thought it was me, that I was being slow, but I really got the messing with you vibe and I'm not ultra-paranoid (or so my psychiatrist says ;)). F'in pissed me off.

I guess Charlie Sheen sent the waiter $1000 to make up for it so it worked out.

http://www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/2 ... 410379053/

But his 20 cent tip is horse ****. If you don't like the service, don't leave a tip at all. By him leaving 20 cents it would have to mean they were going out of their way to be dicks because he went out of his way to be one. Either way, he loses. He got the bad PR and he is gonna get some balls rubbed on his food for a while when he goes out to eat because other servers in other places understand how **** it is to do what he did.
