FREE AGENTS THIS AND NEXT SEASON
I've mentioned in earlier posts the upcoming free agents we have coming up after this season - Out of all those, my priority is Perrish Cox and after him Dan Skuta. Skuta is a quality pass rusher and can play special teams. And we just extended Kendall Hunter to a 1 year deal. We'll see how things shake out with that....But check out the free agent bonanza of spring 2016 and who we have coming off the books - Anquan Boldin, Alex Boone, Derek Carrier (RFA), Craig Dahl, Vernon Davis, Phil Dawson, Kendall Hunter, Joe Looney, Jonathan Martin, Ray McDonald, Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, and Ian Williams....Obviously Aldon is the priority and has to be extended long term..After him, do you give another year or two to Boldin? Slot/possession receivers have longevity so he should be effective. What about Looney and Jonathan Martin? Quality backups and Looney may even become starter. What about Ian Williams? The Niners extended Dorsey but should they have extended Ian Williams instead? He is a few years younger and beat Dorsey for the NT job before 2013. Not sure about Boone and Vernon, after all you cant pay everyone.

I don't think so. Dorsey is a safer bet IMO. Williams was coming off a major injury, and I think Dorsey out-played Williams last season. Now that Williams is out for the season, it's not likely he'll sign an extension because he'll want his contract year to earn a monster contract.
The Niners need to keep compensatory draft picks in mind with things like this. It's win-win for the Niners to not sign Ian to a contract extension. If he doesn't play well, he's cheap to re-sign; if he gets a monster contract, hello 3rd-round pick.
Like I said in the other thread, Culliver needs to be priority #1 as far as contract extensions go (I would've said Aldon, but he'll get the franchise tag if he's not re-signed, so the Niners have more time with him.
Boone? I say let him play his contract out.
Wilhoite is a RFA, so he'll be around another year.
Cox? I don't know if the Niners can afford him now. I think Culliver's a bigger priority. JMHO.
Skuta? Brooks will be gone, so I don't see any reason not to bring him back if he's cheap. However, if someone gives him a bunch of money, that helps the comp' pick formula.
Vernon: pay the man. I don't care about the slump. I don't want to see this passing game without him. That could get ugly. Give him an extension.
Gore? I dunno.

No love for gore for a 1-2 year deal sick?
I hope they at least get him signed for one more year. Maybe even a team 2nd year option.

I really don't know. I have no idea what kind of money he's going to want, and I don't know what the cap looks like. I have to honestly say I'd put him at a lower priority than the following:
Signing Iupati.
Signing Cox
Giving Ray MacDonald an extension
Giving Vernon an extension.
Gore may fit into all of that, but I have no idea how much he's going to cost.

As for Gore, NO WAY the 49ers will pay a 32 year old RB the going rate for RBs 6-7 mil a year. But then again, no other team will either. So we'll see. Iupati is gone, Cox I definitely want back, McDonald is 30 and has 1 year left, so they probably let him play out his deal. We have young players waiting in the wings with Dial and Tank. As for Vernon, I'd let him play out his deal too.

You're probably right about McDonald, but it'd be really nice to keep him because JSmith won't be around much longer. If the Niners steal a pro bowl DE somewhere in the draft I might feel differently.
Have to disagree about Vernon. If he doesn't re-sign and Aldon is already locked up (contractually) I say tag him.

What if we switch to 4-3? I know it's been brought up 1002 times before but if Borland keeps up his level of play you can't just not play him can you? I really like the 3-4 just asking others opinions. I ask because it could change some minds about the dline as well as lb obviously.

It could work, but the Niners' defense is already a dominant unit. I don't know about changing it that drastically just because a potential star is on the bench. It's a good problem to have.

Re: FREE AGENTS THIS AND NEXT SEASON
Extend Culliver.
Cox depending on his price but I lean on letting him walk. Brock not being able to stay on the field would the the only reason why I lean on trying to extend him but we have young guys in the wings that could provide depth.
Culliver, Cox, and Brock all fill that good #2 CB role but what we need is to go out and draft a shutdown CB and let one of those guys duke it out to see whose #2.
Skuta depends on price. I like him and Brooks will be gone but Aldon and Lynch are the starters going forward with Lemonier providing depth.

Difference between Culliver and Cox is the ability to play the all important slot CB position. Cox can play it, Cully not so much. I say extend Cox ASAP before he even becomes a FA and before he gets too expensive.

That'd be extremely nice, but it's a pretty unrealistic goal. Especially if you're depending on a rookie to be your shut-down guy.
Any rookie the Niners draft is going to have a really hard time out-performing Dontae Johnson IMO. Not because DJ is the greatest thing since sliced bread but rather because the other guy will be a rook. Also, he probably won't be a top 10 pick by any means (unless the Niners trade up). I don't see any CBs in college worth that high of a pick anyway (but I haven't been paying extremely close attention this year).
Next year I could see Culliver & Dontae Johnson staring outside and Ward taking the slot. But Culliver might walk too now that he's probably worth in the 5 to 7 million dollars a year range, so you never know.
The CB situation is way up in the air.

The moment the 2015 FA starts I'd have Jake Locker on the phone to come here. A must have in the off-season, IMO.

I'd have to agree. He might be the one guy I'd want the Niners to sign. He'd hurt the comp' pick formula though.

Looking at the salary cap, I'm starting to realize a few things.
1. Skuta won't be back. They can't afford him.
2. Brooks is as good as gone (that one's obvious)
3. Phil Dawson might be on the chopping block.

4. Craig Dahl won't be back.
5. The Niners should trade Alex Boone.
6. The Niners should consider trading Bethea and moving Ward to safety.
7. Cox is probably as good as gone.
Why? Culliver > Bethea in terms of importance to the team. This upcoming safety class is a good one. The cap space will be invaluable. Don't want to lose Culliver or Ray MacDonald (he's still under contract in 2015, but it'd be nice to extend him). Cox has priced himself out of the Niners IMO. The team will probably go w/ Culliver & Dontae Johnson on the outside next year IMO. I'd move Ward to safety or draft one and let Acker / Reaser / a draft pick fight for the slot spot.

Niners have definitely shown that they are willing to pay their own guys. So we'll see what happens with Cox.
