I'm sure if you dig hard enough I'm sure just about every player has pushed the envelope on breaking the rules... From lineman using substances like pam on their uniforms to players not reporting injuries, from wr's using sticky substances to team DRs "prescribing" questionable medication, and so on so forth... The league is full of rules that get broken on a daily basis... To what degree is the question...

Sure, then I usually apply the wrath of my opinion (:D) against those caught and those who admit it (though less than the caught ones). I mean, what else am I to do? I'm not going to say everyone does it, so it's good, not bad, or not as bad, etc. Yeah, sure, the other cheaters are either lucky or good at hiding and if I knew, I'd condemn (:D) them, too, but I don't. But the good news is that no one cares about my opinion.

Re: Jerry Rice Just Admited He Used Stickum
It is just plain sad when the great ones from the past try to draw attention back to themselves good or bad.
From a personal stand point it has made me redraw my perspective of the past how I view achievements in sports. Whether it is cycling, baseball, football or other there have always been periods where cheating or breaking the rules persist. Stickum, pine tar, vasoline and steriods. How do we remember Gaylord Perry fondly and vilify Barry Bonds? Do we treat people caught cheating later like the Tour de France and strip people of titles and not acknowledge a winner?
To me I just can't go back and remove past champions and add astericks to records at my own whim. So my new rule of thumb is that if you don't get caught during or after the immediate season- let it stand. I know that it is over simplified, but it works for me.
In getting back to the Patriots, it bothers me that the NFL caught this during the game and it looks like they may let this go unpunished.

Issue is with the word Stickum as it brings up the goop that was all over players and their jerseys during the heyday of it's use.
I'm guessing the use wasn't so much that it crossed the line of cheating and is in the gamesmanship category since it sounds like he just made his gloves stickier but to the level he couldn't touch anything without it adhering to his hands.
I'm just in the camp that yea maybe by the letter of the law what Rice did and deflategate is cheating but I just don't see them as things that had any significant impact on games.
Maybe stickier hands gave Rice a handful of extra catches but he still catches 99% of the balls with or without it.

How dumb do you have to be to bring this up and piss on your own legacy.
Embarrassed for Rice. One of my favorite players of all time but just not that bright.

That seems to be the mantra whenever a team or player is caught cheating.
Seattle caught for PEDs: Everyone does it.
New England caught cheating TWICE: No big deal.
NFL games are won by inches sometimes. Cheating is cheating. If Rice cheated he deserves an asterisk just like *Brady, and he brought shame upon a great franchise (if it's the actual banned spray he used).

Alright.....I have to come clean. All these revelations are giving me a guilty conscience.
I used an expired coupon at Target last week.
When I was 5, I pocketed a candy bar at a neighborhood drugstore.
In college, I inhaled.
Whew.....I feel so much better. The truth shall set you free.

He did it because he knows in this society people will take almost anything that isn't that bad (like rape, murder, etc.) and make it out to either be something everyone does, not a big deal, unclear what happened, someone else's fault, etc. He said it was illegal, he said it was sort of cheating, but he feels comfort in saying that because 1) nothing will come from it (I wouldn't say something should) and 2) people will defend anything (not saying that this is so reprehensible).
It's as bad as it is, not worse nor better - sorry I can't put exactly where that is. I guess I will say, it's like obscenity - I know it when I see it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_know_it_when_I_see_it I know when someone is making too big of a deal over it and I know when someone defends/dismisses it too easily, but I don't know exactly how bad it is.

If it was OK for the "Little Giants," it's OK for Jerry Rice.
