Linebacker should be a top priority in the draft next year. Could really use an impact player alongside Bowman. The team has twelve picks next year. Would be nice for a change if they could package some of these picks to move up. The team now has alot of young players. It is time to start looking for quality instead of quantity and drafting for need instead of BPA

Martin graded out ok. Thomas graded poorly. Same with Pears, no surprise there. Looney too.

Joe Staley: 1.1 overall, 0.4 pass block, 0.6 run block
Alex Boone: -0.7, 0.2, 0.1, -1.0 penalty
Joe Looney: -0.1, 0.1, -0.2
Marcus Martin: 0.4, -0.9, 1.3 - 1 QB hurry
Erik Pears: -1.4, -1.1, -0.4 - 2 QB hurry
Brandon Thomas: -2.3, -0.6, -1.8 - 1 QB hurry
Andrew Tiller: 1.1, 0.3, 0.7
Trent Brown: 1.8, 0.5, 1.2
Ian Silberman: 1.6, 0.3, 1.2
Jordan Devey: 1.2, -0.6, 1.7
Dillon Farrell: 1.4, 0.4, 0.9
Sean Hooey: -1.2, 0.5, -1.8
Patrick Miller: -2.3, -1.1, -1.3
Justin Renfrow: -2.8, -0.6, -2.3 - 1 sack

Not good pass-blocking numbers in general. Silberman scored pretty well, though, particularly in the run game, which is nice to see. Brown, too. Not sure what's up with Thomas and Martin. We were counting on them to really solidify two inside spots, and at least to date it hasn't happened.

Maybe we all mght be expecting a bit much from Thomas and Martin at this point. We were all hoping these two guys would instantly become good players and hold the oline. But Thomas is practically speaking a rookie this year and while Martin played some last year, he is still 21 years old? Sometimes an offensive lineman like Harris Barton will start as a rookie and play really well, but it is common for oline players to take time to develop. Maybe Martin and Thomas justn need more time.

Agreed, for the most part.

With this new o-line not having the continuity of having played together for any meaningful amount of time, I am not surprised there have been struggles, both individual and collective. Even though pass protection was also a glaring issue in 2014, the lack of continuity would explain why pass protection has been more of an issue so far this preseason than run blocking.

I wholeheartedly believe that, barring injuries (plural), the pass protection will improve as the season goes on, but we as fans will also have to temper expectations to some degree because defensive coordinators are going to key on Erik Pears and attempt to expose his ineptitude, along with the inexperience of Brandon Thomas (unless Looney wins a starting job, in which case include his name alongside what I said about Pears).

But the oline no longer has a subway turnstile at LG mascaraing as a 330+ lb Samoan, so that's a positive right there.

I'm not overly worried about Thomas and Martin as I see them both growing into their roles.

Martin is still really young and if I recall correctly Anthony Davis who was drafted around Martin's age took a couple of years before he hit his stride.

This is basically Thomas' rookie year which he's coming back from injury and making a position switch so some growing pains are inevitable for him as well.

That's why I would rather Martin at C and Thomas at RG so they can continue to get reps and the entire line can gel together since it doesn't seem like Kilgore is due back soon and it's looking like he might be a PUP guy to open the season.

Pro Football Focus:

49ers:

–QB Colin Kaepernick only attempted five passes with two completions; Kaepernick was unable to complete a pass while under pressure.

–LB NaVorro Bowman played three snaps in his return from his injury suffered in the 2013 season’s NFC championship game. In those three snaps he had two defensive stops.

–First-round rookie D-lineman Arik Armstead was a handful for the backup Cowboys offensive line. He recorded three hurries and was able to cause problems in the running game, even though he only had one assist.

Top 5 graded players:

1. DB Dontae Johnson (+4.3)

2. DL Arik Armstead (+3.1)

3. DT Garrison Smith (+2.9)

4. DT Mike Purcell (+2.5)

5. LB Desmond Bishop (+2.2)
