Jimmy Ward is the best ballhawk in our secondary in terms of ball skills and instincts. If Eric Reid shows he can't provide over the top help this week for Acker, I'd put him on the bench.

If by ballhawk you mean he's around the ball because he's chasing a receiver who's caught a pass on him then I agree.

I'd be curious to see how he's grading out this year. Last year he was being picked on (successfully) by opposing QBs. I have higher hopes for Tartt than Ward based on early data.

There's a reason why Ward was selected first round to play CB. He's great at tracking and catching the ball at its highest point. He compares to the Honey Badger in many ways. He's fearless and always around the ball. You put Brandon Marshall 1 on 1 vs MOST DBs they're going to get burned by it. He didn't have as much CB experience as Mathieu did coming out of college, then he broke his foot. If we're going to face off against a pass happy offense, then we should try using the best personnel to match it. Tartt and Reid are downhill safeties with lots of athleticism. A formula that's great against the run. Ward is suited to play the pass, because of what I've mentioned before.

IIRC Not all of that was on Ward. I believe I read somewhere that Reid admitted he blew some of those coverages and was supposed to be covering over the top on two of the TDs, IE Ward was to hand off to Reid but Reid was not in position.

Again I am going off of memory and could be completely mistaken.

This game comes down to winning the battles in the trenches. This team used to win those battles. Last week no pressure against Big Ben and the offensive line lost the battle against Pittsburgh's defensive front.

Ward got burned many many times well beyond just Marshall. I believe another person he was badly victimized by will be on the field today (Brown). I think the Saints may have owned him too.

He was a first round pick and we didn't get anywhere close to first round value last year, injury aside.

He may pan out as a safety but if he's so good and Reid is so bad, how come he can't beat him out for playing time?

Look Reid is no HOF-er but I just haven't seen anything positive from a guy we spent the 30th pick on. We got 4 other guys with 2 years or less of experience getting lots of snaps in the defensive backfield at comparable or better performance taken much later in their respective drafts.

Time will tell but I'm not seeing it.....

Ward IMO was a such confusing selection and right now, that "gamble" is looking like a fail.

Not mentioning the falling short of trading up for beckham, ther other selections that could've been:
- trading up for a real CB prospect
- Draft Roby based on current selections
- Matthews/Richardson at WR(a Need then still)
- Richburg (high for a C but look at us now)

But we had Ward, a disadvantage to him, stuck between nickel CB(out of position) and backup S.

My sports teams are currently experiencing suckiness. Please pardon the mess.

After Kaepernick threw his second interception, the 49ers’ next 13 plays were runs –- a streak that included two scrambles. Tomsula said he sent the directive to offensive coordinator Geep Chryst to run the ball during that stretch of the game.

“Let’s grab ahold of this and get things calmed down,” Tomsula said was his reasoning by sticking with the running game.

That is troubling. Why is Tomsula screwing around with the Offensive Play Calling. He is a former DLine coach. Let the OC do his job no matter how shittly things are going at the moment.

It's still an offense that wants to be a run first ball control offense so I think the coaches would rather a 7 yard pass on 2nd down than a long incompletetion that sets up 3rd and long.

Wants to be but can it be? Yes, it sure looks like that is the way we want to go as we run first on almost every series. I think we are again making the mistake of giving the defense nothing to fear by not throwing long or even threatening to throw long. If other team in the NFL knows you are going to run, you might wish hope and desire to beat them anyway, but it ain't going to work. My first play this week would be a play action long bomb to Smith, whether he is open or not. Just let them know we can and we will (although I am not sure we will).

As long as we are safe with it. Because if they score 1st and then then we throw an interception to show we're going deep, the game spirals out of control. Or we get a deep sack trying to get there. No reason to be scared to do it, but just throw it where only our guy gets it or nobody.

Whew, good thing we did not risk throwing long, we might have been intercepted! LMAO

Ha ha. When he threw that first one, I knew that this was going to be brought up. After he threw the second one, I was going to do it myself. Then I thought it would be bad luck. Maybe would've stopped the bleeding if I commented myself? We fans have mysterious powers.

Did you see how I already blamed myself for the loss? I told somebody who said that Kaepernick throws an interception on every other throw that he was wrong, that it was every five throws and he's usually good for a touchdown, running. Never joke about your team right before a game, it will either jinx it if the joke is positive or ensure that it will happen if it was negative.
