Re: Post Game thread wk4: Packers @ 49ers
Torrey's 100% spot on. Think about how the rules have been tilted to favor offenses over defenses and especially QBs and receivers.
There's about a 1 square foot area on the QB you can hit without getting flagged.
And WRs can't have anyone breathe on them after five yards without risk of a yellow hanky.

Even if we fix the oline, I suspect that Kaep will still have the same poor decision making and terrible pocket presence.

Where does this " Sacks per game not attrribued to QB " stat come from. The right side of the oline is garbage and Charles Robinson trying to argue its not is just silly. Its horrible, ranked last in NFL. I am not going to defend Kaps play the past couple of games. He has been awful. Yea, he has issues and things have been worse. If anything, he needs a better than average oline because he has a slow release and just doesn't process quickly enough. The offense under Smith and Kap while not great functioned enought to get the team throught he playoffs. I am hoping Gabbert gets a chance to start. I bet at some point he becomes road kill behind the right side of this line if changes are not made.

7 snaps. 3 vs the run, 1 against the pass, and 3 pass rushes (1 QB hurry).

Re: Post Game thread wk4: Packers @ 49ers
No quarterback -- I don't care if he's Sammy frickin' Baugh -- can look good behind an incompetent O-line. Go look at Montana's stats from 1980, when he didn't have any protection either. Almost every pass was a dump-off, so his completion percentage was fairly high, but everything else sucked. (And I was around for that season and went to several games and watched all the rest on television, so this isn't just stat-picking.)
I have hardly heard anyone talking about the real problem here, at least IMO, which is Jed York. He forced Harbaugh out, and the writing on the wall was so clear that most of the players who could do so left right behind Harbaugh. Tomsula is a semi-popular mediocrity who will toe Jed York's line, which is why we have him instead of some proven coach. I have no idea about Geep Chryst, but I know you can't make an offense run right without an offensive line. I've watched them get broken down time and time again and every other problem is secondary to that. The defense is probably good enough at least to content for a playoff spot as it stands, although it ain't great. But we've spent all our time throwing receivers at the issue, or blaming Kaepernick. The offensive line has been going steadily downhill since the second half of last season.
For his own reasons, York tore apart the team. He has to take the blame. Kaerpernick is just another casualty.

That does not mean I think Kaepernick is Joe Montana, or even close. It means I've seen Montana flounder behind an incompetent offensive line, so I can't judge Kaepernick until I see him working behind something that actually does the job.

I don't think he would suddenly become amazing but he would be doing far better than what he's doing now.
Part of the issue with Kap is his head and the other part is he completely has no trust whatsoever in his offensive line so every time he drops back to pass it's like he's expecting pressure and acts accordingly even when there isn't pressure.

There's some decent fan chart breakdown of the All-22 tape on Kaepernick if you go to David Neumann's account on twitter. He posts video of plays with little snippets of his breakdown. Let's just say most of it is not bunnies and rainbows for Kaepernick. Tons of yardage left out on the field.

Interesting; it looked like two things; 1) the o line is still terrible, jesus; 2) a good quarterback with good vision would have gotten the ball to open receivers despite the o line. We don't have either right now.

This is not healthy for me... reading up on comments and someone mention Patton was wide open on the Kap INT into double coverage to Torrey.
Look at video, at the 2:22 mark, a bit blurred but recognizable is an open 49ers WR standing by the sideline, with no Packer near him for about 10-15 yards, about 25 yards or more from the LOS....

Just watched the NFL 8 minute highlights of the game. Most of the Niners "highlights" for offense were punts. Seriously. Also, looked like it was a very boring game.

Pattersonca65 wrote:Gotta give the D credit. They played considering the offense couldn't stay on the field and produce anything. Kap looked bad and the oline played poorly again. I think Kap is hearing footsteps in his head and has lost confidence. I dislike Vance McDonald the most this game. Drops a pass for a probable first down, makes a costly penalty, and fumbles the ball which we were lucky to get back. Maybe sit Kap and let Gabbert play. The defense played much better. None of those huge holes today and coverage was there to make Rodgers have to hold on the ball longer.
I agree. The D played as well as could be expected. From what I read, Bowman talked to Mangini and advised less blitzing which is what they did. Also, Aaron Lynch had a good game with 2 sacks. I am not sure why Mangini had him mostly in coverage the last two games, but he finally turned him loose and Lynch did what he does best.

Maybe. But Justin Smith was playing on one arm and was spending more time in the Trainer's room than the practice field. Willis shut it down midseason last year to have surgery on his toe which wasn't healing. He hasn't been the same the past couple of years. Obvious Borland was done with the NFL.
And yet...those guys were still thinking about, and didn't announce their retirements until AFTER the coaching change had been fully made.
I don't see how you don't think is had SOMETHING to do with it. Maybe they were leaning that way regardless, but the coaching changed pushed them over the edge.
Justin Smith would be the only guy likely retired due to the coaching staff change but he had one foot out the door anyways and I'm sure he just didn't want to bother with having an all new defensive staff.
I believe Anthony Davis said he was taking a year off from football. Not a retirement. So I guess just pretend he's on IR.
