After 2016 season, he's a UFA but he could be cut by June 1 to save most of his salary.

Since they drafted Smelter in the 4th round, you'd think they will really work on him during the offseason, to prepare him for training camp.

Then of course, there's Ellington too. But Patton has to take advantage of the fact that neither Smelter nor Ellington are getting as many snaps as he's getting.

Patton makes $675K next year. We would save $150K if we cut him in favor of DeAndrew White. Hardly worth it for the savings alone. Patton was kind of on the bubble going into this season, but I think he's in pretty good shape. White has yet to pan out, Boldin is a FA next year and virtually assured of leaving, and Simpson is going to need to get his act together if he's going to stick. Smelter will basically be a rookie next year, and it typically takes WRs awhile to adjust to the NFL.

I guess we'll see at the end of the season and after the draft or leading up to the draft, whether they look for another WR to select.

Trent may be gun-shy about drafting a WR before the 4th round. But if there's one in the second round who has #1 potential, they have to look at it, since Boldin is still the most productive of the WRs (which is a sad reflection).
