Maybe Thomas could use better coaching ...

He could've been here if he wanted to. He turned down a contract offer, and nobody else signed him.

I'm hoping he and John Hankins come calling on Monday. :noway:

Hey now, pretty sure I saw Goedert dropping a ball that was in his hands this week, too. Kittle should have caught that one, and that play turned out to be a real difference-maker in the game, but it's not like Kittle didn't otherwise perform.

I had to leave at halftime and watch the second half on my phone. My brief assessment of the game:

The D played much better than anticipated. Buckner is a frickin' beast, and starts his bid for DPOY. He's going to get the recognition he deserves this year. Warner really played well, which was nice to see. Looks like he had a couple miscues, but for a first start as a rookie third-rounder, I thought it was a very promising showing. The tackling has to improve, and there were a few blown coverages, Witherspoon needs to play the ball better in the air, but overall I was pleasantly surprised. I will say, the price was crazy steep, but part of me was thinking about how incredible this D would have looked if they had gotten Mack. Can you imagine Mack and Buckner running that stunt? It'd make me forget all about Justin and Aldon Smith. Oh, and Solomon, way to seamlessly replace the bone-headedness of Ahmad Brooks. It takes a special talent to jump on the fourth attempt to draw you offsides.

The offense was a disappointment. I'm willing to cut a little slack due to extenuating circumstances. McKinnon was supposed to be a focal point and we don't have any clear replacements for him in the passing game. Losing Goodwin, Person, and Garnett was brutal, particularly in terms of the effect on the OL. And Minnesota has one of the best Ds in the league. Despite that, we were able to move the ball fairly well, we just couldn't seal the deal. And those dangerous throws Jimmy G has a penchant for throwing were getting picked. I'm certainly not jumping ship on Jimmy at this point. He showed some flaws in terms of sensing pressure and making poor decisions, but he also showed some of the things that made him (briefly) the highest-paid QB in the league. We have markedly easier matchups for the offense over the next few weeks, so let's see how he rebounds.

I always figured this would be a loss, and frankly, given the mistakes (four turnovers, several crucial drops), it's something of an achievement it wasn't worse. But I also worry that our D won't look as good when we play a team with a better interior OL. I don't see any reason to change course in terms of my preseason expectations based on this game, but it was frustrating to see us actually making something of a game out of it despite all the mistakes.

The lose seemed to really impact the fans that thought this was a Super Bowl caliber team and Jimmy G was Brady and Rodgers combined.

This lost to me was what I would say was right on schedule with where the team is at. A better team than last year that's narrowed the gap between it and the top teams but still hasn't arrived yet.

I expected Jimmy G to take some lumps and have some ups and downs this season. It's only his 1st offseason in Kyle's offense and historically 1st-year starters regardless of age have some struggles.

I felt the real turning point in this game is when Garnett went down. The pass protection got worse and it made running the ball or doing anything on the right side not viable so it just really limited the offense.

Also you just have to tip your cap to the Vikings defense because they made two good plays to break up TD passes and kept the pressure constant throughout.

Those fans are a very small minority. Most of the fans are reasonable about this team and Jimmy G. Most saw this as a 8 or 9 win team and yesterday doesn't change that this game being one of those losses. This wasn't going to be a one year rebuild.
