I've been good with this idea for about 15 years now. Go ahead and do whatever you want with a player retirement ceremony and do what you want with his jersey/number (hang it somewhere, put it on/in a Ring of Honor, put it in a team's Hall of Fame, etc.). But then go ahead and allow the number to be worn again after you've given the player his due. I am not hurt, offended, sore, or any other negative feeling in the LEAST when I see a number a great player wore on another player regardless of the next player's status.

I feel for Bowman. He looked like he was on his way to a potential HOF career, only to have it derailed by some fairly freak injuries. I didn't love the way he left the team, but he was a huge part of our run under Harbaugh, and I'll always be grateful for it.
