Re: The Alex Smith Thread
This is what a Chiefs fan over at the Hoop had to say about Alex Smith and KC's troubles.
Zone. Lots of zone. Normally it shouldn't be this bad with Smith, as I've said before, it's not like he's never had a modicum of success versus zone. I even argued it was actually a strength of his last year as it invites larger windows; there is always an opening in zone if you know where to look. Smith may be looking to go deep too much, and playing outside of his bounds, imo. A well designed zone specifically takes away big plays, that is exactly what has happened outside of Oakland (which has an outright abomination of a defense) and Denver (which is very man heavy) since Pittsburgh.
Second part of it is Hunt is seeing 8, 9, even 10 man boxes pre snap. The OL is a zone-blocking scheme, it's not built to overpower you even if they have some combo concepts. Hunt doesn't have a chance on a lot of these runs. Even bad defenses can look great against the run if that's what they tee off on. If a team is stacking the box, running zone, and running run blitzes, and you still can't throw the ball downfield, something is very, very wrong.
The Chiefs destroyed LeSean McCoy- nobody is going to be impressed in that performance unless the bar is set very low on run D (sigh). It's the same deal with Hunt. Very few teams truly are impotent against the run because they lack the bodies. It's a chess game, and the fact teams feel they can completely ignore a passing game with Kelce, Hill, and Hunt out of the backfield is completely absurd. Every week I am seeing players open, often for touchdowns, first downs, etc, and Smith misses them at an inordinate rate. Normally this is deep, but it's starting to be short even now.
OL zone-blocks, it's not necessarily built to overpower as much as it's designed to out athlete you. Spread'em out, pull a guard, etc. Doesn't work when you're getting tee'd off on. 5 versus 8 is not much of a fair fight when your MO is to spread them out and you can't pass the ball.
OL has had some issues lately, but they're not bad at all in my opinion; Smith's pocket presence has always been quite bad. He's far more likely to take a sack than he is to step in the pocket and take a shot; or he just scrambles which against zone won't do much.
As for what this thread is about originally, Hunt. I don't think he has changed at all really.

Alex couldn't bring his team back.
49ers wouldn't have beaten the Falcons in that NFC Championship game if Harbaugh hadn't switched to CK.

Re: The Alex Smith Thread
I think it is funny how little slack AS is given. The 49ers never should have switched to CK. He was such a one-dimensional player who really had no accuracy and was a one read QB. The primary reason he is not in the league is he is not talented enough. Had he not decided to use his waning popularity to make a social stand, he'ld probably still be in the league, but it would not be as a starter.
Don't get me wrong, AS has his own limitations. He doesn't improvise well and while he is smart, the on field decision making isn't lightening quick and is clouded by his propensity to tuck and run, but he is a very good QB. Superbowl winning potential? I think in the right circumstances, but being in a situation where his #1 WR goes down, I don't think AS is going to flourish.

Alex Smith - QB - Chiefs
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Chiefs are open to trading Alex Smith in the offseason.
The dots have connected to this ever since the Chiefs traded up for Patrick Mahomes in the first round of last April's draft. Smith has just one year left on his deal through 2018 with a $20.6 million cap hit, and the cap-strapped Chiefs can clear $17 million of that by shedding Smith. However, Smith is coming off arguably his best season as a pro and is still theoretically in the prime of his career at 33 years old. He could be the best quarterback on the market if Kirk Cousins sticks in D.C. RapSheet mentions the Browns, Cardinals, Broncos, Jets, Jaguars, and Bills as potential suitors for Smith, who could fetch the Chiefs multiple draft picks.

Re: The Alex Smith Thread
I wouldn't trade a lot for Alex. He's fool's gold. Everyone has seen his ceiling.
Now for a rebuilding team, maybe he's okay for a couple of years, if they don't have too high expectations.

Re: The Alex Smith Thread
Isn't his contract up? if so, wouldn't think the return value being high at all. Plus factor his age and all.
Maybe Cleveland?
Jacksonville if they really need to?
Denver?
AZ?
Minnesota if none of their QBs work? lol

He's got one year left at like $20 million. Chiefs could clear cap space by trading him this offseason.

Re: The Alex Smith Thread
He has one year for $17M left. Cutting him would leave $3.6M of dead money.
He just threw for over 4000 yards with 26 TDs and 5 INTs. Chiefs defense went out the window when Berry was lost.
Fool’s Gold my ass.
He will have great trade value. KC should keep him another year and rebuild their defense. Make a real run.

Re: The Alex Smith Thread
Would you have given up the 2nd round pick that the 49ers gave up for Jimmy?
I wouldn't, not for a 33-year old Alex Smith.

I read he is owed $17.5 million. Supposedly the Chiefs are projected today to be about $8 million over the cap. So not only do they want to move on to Mahomes but they are also looking to clear cap space

ALEX SMITH
QB, WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM
Washington placed QB Alex Smith (leg surgeries) on active/PUP.
It gives the organization a chance to see where he's at during camp. The team can always opt to remove him at any point ahead of the regular season, though any extended stay would guarantee his absence through Washington's first six games. Smith remains under contract through 2022 — Washington does have a team-friendly out with "only" $16.2 million in dead cap to take on after this year — but the team should know where the 36-year-old stands health-wise by the time their regular season opener commences on September 13.

Re: The Alex Smith Thread
I heard Haskins had some moments in some games towards the end of last season.
At this point, they have to go with Haskins, though not sure what Alex's contract status is.
In any event, they're not expected to compete in the NFC East so ...

ALEX SMITH
QB, WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM
Washington HC Ron Rivera said he was "pleasantly surprised" by Alex Smith's recovery from a catastrophic leg injury, and could compete for the team's starting quarterback spot.
Rivera told reporters he could "envision" the 36-year-old Smith entering the "conversation" for the starting job if he continues to show he's recovered from his 2018 leg break, which required 17 surgeries. "He’s looked really fluid, he really has, and it’s a tribute to who he is, it’s a tribute to his trainers and his doctors that have helped him get to where he is today," said Rivera, who has declined to name Dwayne Haskins as the Football Team's starter. With explosive play makers Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson, Derrius Guice, and Steve Sims, Jr., Smith could be at the helm of an offense with sneaky upside. The king of QB streamers could yet reclaim his crown.

Washington HC Ron Rivera said if Alex Smith is activated, "he's going to be in the throes of competition" for the team's starting quarterback spot.
It's further confirmation that Smith, after recovering from a horrific leg break and multiple infections, will get a shot as the Football Team's Week 1 starter, barring setbacks. It's clear Dwayne Haskins won't be given the starting gig, and it makes Smith a viable late-round pick in superflex leagues.

ALEX SMITH
QB, WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM
Washington Football Team activated QB Alex Smith (leg) from the active/PUP list.
The move will be made official on Sunday. Now 36, Smith has not practiced since suffering one of the most gruesome injuries in NFL history on Nov. 18, 2018 against the Texans. The injury required an astounding 17 different surgeries. His return is a miracle, though he is not a realistic contender for starting duties in Washington, despite what coach Ron Rivera said earlier this week. Smith's NFL future is murky, but if he's to play another regular season down, it probably won't be in Washington. Stranger things have happened, of course.

ALEX SMITH
QB, WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM
Alex Smith has been cleared for 11-on-11 drills.
Washington didn’t practice in pads, but it’s obviously a good sign for Smith. Dwayne Haskins has been getting first-team reps throughout camp. ESPN's John Keim reported Smith "hasn't really challenged" for the starting job. A healthy Smith could have the edge over Kyle Allen for the backup role.
