Re: 2023 Offseason
Not providing a link, but word is that Hargrave was offered more money elsewhere, but chose to sign with the Niners anyway. If so, that's excellent news. Not only did we get him for less than his market price, but it would appear that he picked the Niners because he wants another shot at winning the SB. Should mean he's coming in motivated.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Not Niners news, but the Eagles have now lost five defensive starters from the SB. Hargrave was the true impact player of the bunch, but Slay was a key piece and will presumably go elsewhere now that he's been cut - though sometimes players will re-sign for less in this situation. Gardner-Johnson also a key player who is likely to depart, which would be six of eleven players gone for them, including 5/6 players on in the back-seven. NFC is ours to take, if we can sort out the QB position and get even average play out of RT.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Interesting move. Really high character guy coming out, but not an explosive athlete. I could see him stepping into the Omenihu role. He's got good size (6'4", 265 pounds with long arms and big hands). At the combine, he was about an inch shorter and 15 pounds lighter than Omenihu. His arms are also almost two inches shorter, but Omenihu has crazy-long arms (36") and Ferrell is still in the 74th percentile for DEs.
Several of their athletic scores were remarkably similar. 4.36 (Ferrell) vs. 4.4 (O) in the short shuttle. 7.26 (F) vs. 7.25 (O at pro day; .2 seconds slower at the combine) in the three-cone. 9'6" (F) vs. 9'7" (O) in the broad jump. Ferrell had 25 bench reps to Omenihu's 15, but that can be attributed in part to those super-long arms. Oddly, Ferrell didn't do the 40 or vertical, so tough to get a great sense of his straight-line explosiveness.
Seems like the perception of Ferrell suffers a bit because he was such a high pick, and he could find a role and be a nice rotational piece in this defense like Key and Omenihu. I like the move - assuming it's on the cheap.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Thing with Rodgers is he seems to want the same Packers offense or passing game so Hackett is also going to Jets?
So he doesn’t want a learning curve with new WRs?

Didn't Rodgers complain a lot about not having good receivers in recent years with the Packers? Now he wants them to go with him?

It's a bit of a head-scratcher. I get bringing in one or two of those guys, but as said, the Jets already have a good squad at receiver. Why not look to develop the young guys? Though apparently they could very easily cut or trade Corey Davis with virtually no cap impact.

I like this because I am guessing the Niners are betting on Kris Kocurek. I'm sure Lynch/Kyle would get Kocurek's input on any DL options. If Kocurek says I can make that guy work (assuming they are healthy so please don't throw Kinlaw's name at me!), I think Kocurek has more than enough in-the-trenches cred to listen to him.

Niners just signed Isaiah Oliver to a 2 year deal. I love the signing. Solid nickel corner and very good against the run. Loved him in college too at Colorado!

I like this signing as well. Coming out of college, the player he was compared to was Ahkello Witherspoon (comparable size and speed and ability to play press-man coverage). Hopefully Oliver has or can develop better ball tracking skills than Witherspoon showed during his Niner stint but I'm guessing that Steve Wilks, as a former secondary coach, should be able to help in that area. He has experience at both outside and nickel but excels more in the slot; 75% of his snaps last season were in the slot and he allowed only a 72.4 passer rating into his coverage. And according to PFF, he was the sixth best run defender among all CB's last season. Should be a good battle between Oliver and Womack for the nickel corner position - may the best man win!

From the little I have read, he was not good at all on the outside but when he moved to nickel he really started to excel.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Man, losing Moseley stings badly. E-Man was arguably the best CB on the team. He was seemingly only getting better. After his quite unfortunate injury (on an inconsequential play in garbage time no less) the defense overall took a step back for several weeks. He was a key ingredient to the defense. Sucks they let him go, especially on such a small commitment from Detroit.
Don't love a 4 year extension for Brendel when he is 30 years old. However the guarantees seem to be light. Also despite being 30, Jake could still have some untapped upside to squeeze out of him. He has played very few games in his career, and was away from the NFL entirely for awhile there. At the very least, he doesn't have a lot of wear an tear on him which is a + for a dude that lives in the trenches.
Losing Brunskill in of itself isn't a big deal. However, he had a lot of versatility and the remaining options for OL plug ins are thin and completely unproven. So losing Brunskill coupled with the hole at RT due to McGinchey departing, leaves the OL "depth" in a precarious position. Going to need at least 1 of McKivitz/Moore/Zakelj/Poe/Gutierrez to be a key contributor this year, probably more than that. Especially without a draft pick until late in round 3.
The Clelin Ferrell pickup is such a 49ers move. Grab a DL for cheap that has disappointed elsewhere, get him under Kocurek's guidance and hope he become a reliable contributor. These types of moves won't always work out, but the hit rate so far has been remarkably high. Solid move.
The Oliver pickup fills the slot/nickel CB hole. He was very good in that role last season, so its a nice pickup. Still they need help on the outside. They needed help out there even if Moseley came back. DMo started to stabilize late last season, but we can't feel great about him being an unquestioned starter going into next season. CB depth continues to be a question as well. The team constantly loads up on DL to insulate from injuries there, but they don't do the same with the back end of the defense. This has bitten them quite frequently.

PFF graded him at 77.9 last year. That is pretty darn good.

Rodgers is trying to get them to add a bunch of his former teammates, especially at receiver. They're after Lazard, possibly Cobb, Marcedes Lewis, and now word is he wants them to look into OBJ. I get adding one or two of those guys, but where's the limit?
The Jets already have a good receiving corps. Garrett Wilson had a great rookie year and is poised to be a legit #1. Corey Davis is a good #2. Elijah Moore has real potential as a slot receiver and is an excellent #3. You would expect all three guys to be even better with improved QB play. Denzel Mims came into the league three years ago with elite athletic scores (really poor short shuttle, but excellent in all other areas including the three-cone, which suggests he has plenty of quickness) and still has plenty of upside. Realistically, it would be tough to add three receivers to that group, especially if none are impact players on STs (Lazard may play gunner?), especially if they're older guys who only have a couple years left.
Anyway, just another reason I'm glad we were not in on Rodgers. Dude just causes problems.
Crazy the demands he is making. A guy who has been a choker recently and going to turn 40 years old. I wonder what they are going to give up for him? If the Jets don't do something with him at QB fairly quickly I can see this potentially turning into another disaster.

Very good indeed. That score makes him the second highest in our secondary behind Charvarius Ward (81.0) and ahead of Hufanga (72.1). Womack, whom I suspect Oliver will be competing with for the slot nickel position, was a respectable 69.7 and Lenoir (who I expect will start at outside CB) was 61.0.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Ferrell deal has a max of $2.5 million. Love that. As said, the guy checked all boxes off the field, just wasn't nearly worth the fourth overall pick. But he's a solid player, especially against the run. PFF score of 63.8 last year in a bad offense, which isn't great, but it's decent play (Omenihu was 67.5, Ebukam was 69.1). And he's coming in for basically 1/4 or 1/5 what those guys cost. I don't think he's going to notch 8 sacks this year, but he should be able to get on the field in base downs, do some solid run-stuffing, occasionally take advantage of the attention everyone else on the DL is drawing to get home to the QB. I would also expect him to get snaps inside on passing downs, which is how Arden Key found success in our system. Very good team-building move, and the cherry on top is that it probably doesn't affect our comp picks.

Re: 2023 Offseason
DT TY McGill to the Niners on a one-year deal. Doesn't really move the needle much for me. Depth piece, especially if Kinlaw leaves. Kind of surprised we brought in another smaller DT as it still feels like we could use a plugger, but maybe McGill can do some of that at his smaller size.

I guess McGill was already on the roster. Whoops. Midseason acquisition? I had completely forgotten he was on the team.

I don’t know if this is where you post draft takes or not.
I’ve been watching sone Cody Mauch and he’s looking like the perfect RT candidate. He has outstanding movement skills, a great motor and a nasty streak.
