Re: 2023 Season
Rough game.
DL can't even force holding flags right now.
Give QBs, especially someone like Burrow with all those weapons, enough time and the results are like this.
I still remember the KC game last year. Mahomes had 423 yards, 3 TDs and 1 int. Kelce had 6 catches for 98 yards but the leading WRs was JuJu Smith Schulters averaging 17.7 per catch.
Mahomes was sacked only once.
That is why I was always suspicious of this defense, though last year, statistically they were good otherwise.
They played very well in the Dallas game. Greenwell and Warner were everywhere. Maybe they can regain that form but the secondary is still a problem.
Especially if the DL can't perform to the very high expectations the team has.

Re: 2023 Season
The above doesn't even include the struggles and poor showing they had against practice squad PJ Walker's Browns 3 weeks ago.
At this point talent level, reputation, history, etc need to get removed from the equation. Right now there is no denying that this is just a terrible, bottom of the barrel defense.
They can't rush the passer, can't cover receivers, can't contain QB mobility, can't force punts and get off the field, and routinely give up 3rd & Long conversions, and have bad play calling.
As Lombardi mentions they don't even have the injury excuse. Greenlaw missed the Cleveland game, but other than that they are pretty healthy across the board.
Until further notice, we should move forward realizing that the defense is downright bad and expect that to continue.

Re: 2023 Season
I just read an article in our local (Monterey) paper that said Wilks defense is the same every play and easy to figure out. Makes sense with the recent results, but I am not sure it explains the pass rush problem. The defense is a much bigger problem than our qb.thesack12 wrote:

When watching 80% of the time it looks like the exact same when lining up, there is no creativity at all. Whatever we are doing on the front 4, it is completely different from years past. I think I saw our first stunt in awhile yesterday.
Defense never getting of the field hurts the offense more than we probably realize. Our offense is very much rhythm based, when the defense can't force punts and the offense gets a possession every 5-7 min it is a recipe for disaster

Re: 2023 Season
Oh and watching Deebo all blinged out and stuffing his face on the sideline annoyed me for some reason.
WAsn't he one of the players who got into it with the Browns and riled them up?
That defense hasn't shut anyone else down since.

Seahawks trading for Leonard Williams. They are really going for it, won't be an easy division to win

Re: 2023 Season
While the defense rightfully gets most of the headlines in terms of how far we have fallen the past 3 games, another point that needs to be addressed is the disappearance of our running game. CMC had 459 yards rushing over the first 4 games, averaging over 5.7 yards/carry. CMC was being hoisted as a potential MVP candidate. Over the last 4 games (including the blowout win against the Cowboys), CMC has 193 yards "good" for 3.4 yards/carry. Obviously it becomes much easier for Purdy or any other QB to do well when the defense is focused on stopping the run. Even when Purdy was playing well during our 5-0 start, the offense clicked because of the running game or the threat of it. With teams knowing our running game is now average at best, I expect Purdy (or Darnold) to struggle more than when defenses feared our ground game. Getting Trent back will help but the rest of our line all took a step back over the past 3 games. If the OL play improves, both our running and passing games should respond.

They smell blood in the water in the division. Niners are still the more talented team, but they need to right the ship now.

Leonard Williams isnt that great of a player. One time Pro Bowler back in 2016 and last productive season was 2020 when he had 11 1/2 sacks and 30 QB hits. Hasnt come close to that since. Now if we can get Jaylon Johnson THAT would be a boost for the secondary.

Williams is a good, maybe not great player. He's not going to make the difference for them, but maybe he picks up some of the slack from losing Nwosu. Regardless, we can't take them lightly at this point. Though this team needs to focus on itself more than what other teams are doing.

Indeed. Jaylon Johnson would be a very nice pick up. That would shift Lenoir to nickel and benefit the whole defense. Oliver has been a disappointment I have to say. Last 4 games, opposing QBs have a 100% completion when targeting him. We really need someone like we had in K'Waun Williams and Jimmie Ward manning that nickel post. But Mooney Ward has to play better too. He's given up plays and been penalized a lot. Lenoir is our best corner.

Bears don't sound like they are overly interested in the trade market, which means we may have to overpay to get their attention. Donte Jackson of the Panthers may not be as good as Johnson but is probably a more realistic target since Wilks is familiar with him. A former track star, Jackson would also become our fastest CB. Speed in our secondary is definitely not one of our strengths.

Johnson just requested trade from the Bears. I also read Niners connecting to Montez Sweat. Should be interesting.

Sounds like the Bills and Steelers are also interested. Could get pretty expensive if it is a bidding war.

My preference was Montez Sweat. Bit Young if healthy has a chance to be very good and he's 3 years younger than Sweat. He's only 24. He's also up to a solid start this season with 5 sacks. Hopefully a jolt for the pass rush.

That's aggressive, but I don't hate it. It's expensive for what is almost certainly a half-year rental, but he's a talented guy, has five sacks this year, and will be motivated as he's a FA this offseason. We have three third-round picks this year, and several fourth-rounders. Given the way we've used third-rounders, I'd rather have the proven player.
One thing I'm not certain about that would affect my view of this: can we get a comp pick for him if he goes to another team this year? He didn't get a fifth-year option, and I'm not sure in that case if players count toward the comp pick formula. If they do, it's a solid trade. Good chance we could recoup at least a fourth-rounder for him a year later. And maybe more if he goes on a tear.
He and Bosa reunited, which could be fun. That DL better start producing....

Neither guy was likely to be a long-term solution. This is likely for this year only. I don't know how we could afford to extend either guy.

Looks like it doesn't count for the compensatory formula:
https://overthecap.com/declined-team-options-will-no-longer-allow-players-to-become-compensatory-free-agents
In that case, Sweat might have made more sense.
Though Sweat went to the Bears for a second-rounder.
