Re: 2024 NFL Season
This is a good article that spells out how releasing Deebo would affect the cap.

Re: 2024 NFL Season
I absolutely hated the Deebo restructure. Obviously a guy we'd want to maintain some leverage with contract-wise. Very good chance we'd see him fall off. The past few weeks have basically ended any AJ Brown-Deebo Samuel debate. Brown is unstoppable. Deebo is barely mobile.

Re: 2024 NFL Season
This article is proposing an extension. Oh **** no. Deebo looks completely washed. Maybe he rebounds, but he's not what this offense needs any more. We need good route-runners who can consistently get open quickly so Purdy can hit them with rhythm, timing, and anticipation. The Deebo gimmicks aren't working any more, and he seems basically helpless out there.

I agree 100%. I hope they don't extend him. I just don't see keeping him around a few more years. I still think they drafted Purcell to replace Deebo opposite BA. The 49ers currently have too much cap tied up at the WR position. Deebo's gimmicks haven't really worked in a couple of years. Defenses aren't fooled by it anymore and Shanahan has stubbornly stuck to it. I also can't see anyone trading him and taking his contract. Teams see what you see on film.

Watching raiders chiefs. Chiefs 74 starts early every pass play again and it's never called. And with about 10 minutes in the 4th, he blatantly holds Crosby with no call.

Great play by Mahomes on that fumbled snap to clinch the game. That guy is just a game changer.
Right up there with when he blocked the FG against the broncos.

Lol. Yup. He's also good at blinding refs to false starts and holding calls on his team.CrimsonCrew wrote:Great play by Mahomes on that fumbled snap to clinch the game. That guy is just a game changer.

If they keep playing like this they are going to be very vulnerable in the playoffs.

Might be the worst 11-1 team ever.

Buffalo took care of them. Even the Ravens should beat them if Lamar Jackson can for once not choke in the playoffs

Re: 2024 NFL Season
KC has won like 4 games that they had no business winning.
SF has lost like 4 games that they had no business losing.
In turn, KC has all the margin for error they could possibly need. They could lose out the rest of the season, and still be fine
In turn SF, has completely used up their entire margin for error. The really need to win out, to have any semblance of saving the season.
I'm not at all confident, SF is going to win out

Pearsall is not really anything like Deebo tho, but Deebo in general it's pretty tough to replace not because he's so great because of his unique skill set
that said, we most likely need to let go of Deebo this off-season, even a mid round pick would do

I absolutely agree that deebo is almost irreplaceable. Same thing with McCaffrey. But deebo isn't what he used to be, and the odds of him regaining it are slim.
Arguably he has been hurt more than anyone else (except Purdy) by the absence of aiyuk opening up room to run for him. But if he can't even get off man coverage by linebackers, I just don't see that he has more than a year or two left.

I don't think they drafted Pearsall as a one-to-one replacement. Just as a guy who can play the position, do some of the things Deebo does, but improve some of the areas where Deebo is basically a waste of space.

Re: 2024 NFL Season
Two teams which blitz the most are the Lions and the Chiefs, with the two best records in the league.
They are blitzing almost 40% of the time.
Lions have kept up pass pressure rate even after Hutchinson went down. Not sure if they really increased the frequency of blitzes or they've always been blitzing a lot.
Chiefs, they have pass rushers but pressure is Spagnolo's system.
Bowles' Bucs are probably up there as well, though they tend to give up a lot of passing yards.

He isn't the same as Deebo literally. He doesn't have Deebo's physicality. But he can do some of the same plays like end arounds and has a chance to be a good 2nd receiver. The 49ers can't devote that much cap space to two receivers particularly when it appears Deebo is not what he once was.

They way Deebo has played this year, he isn't worth $2.5 million, much less $25 million. He's 48th in the league in receiving yards and only has one receiving TD. That contract looks really bad right now, and the restructure looks even worse. They should have traded him when they had the chance.

scheme relies on pressure from the front four but front just hasn't been able to, Bosa even before the injury was very hit and miss this season, Hargrave obviously has been out and we get almost no pen up the middle, opposite Bosa the pass rush is almost nonexistent either.

Re: 2024 NFL Season
i don't think we could've schemed around what this season has thrown at us tbh, it's just one of those seasons from hell. use it to get good draft position and reload some talent, if we can get two good back-to-back drafts that will be big long term, reset mentally and physically, clean up the books and make some trades and come back next year fresh.
there is some talk aboutn Niners trading Kyle to Chicago for like 3 first rounders...i'd only consider that if we you can guarantee me Vrabel or something

I don't think they could have schemed their way to the SB, but they could have done a hell of a lot better. Especially on defense.
I agree that at this point we need to focus on giving young players some opportunities and look to the future, but w also need serious upgrades at DC and STs coordinator.

eh, i dunno man, 4th DC in 4 years can take its toll, the brain drain on that side is real, and I think in general our defensive personnel are kinda overrated. we were seeing a lot of holes and gaps last year under Wilks and this year it's just taken full form, and full season injuries to Hargrave and Greenlaw hasn't helped at all. also, tbh, Nick Bosa is pretty overrated. getting paid like a Watt or a Garrett but isn't nearly the game changer they are.
