Hope he has the brain to make the adjustment to the NFL.
I think the coverage thing is a bit overblown. Yeah, there have been some high profile plays where Mays blew coverage. In my view, he seems to be reading the QB too much without keeping track of the receiver. That's correctable...and no I do not believe that just because he was coached by Pete Carroll, he should have already learned it. Carroll is a figure head I'm sure was not coaching DBs.
Set that aside. Here are some other factors: (a) Mays will be playing strong safety and will have fewer obligation to "play centerfield" for the 49ers, which is where he was exposed in the Trojans' defensive scheme; (b) Mays will provide intimidation which will keep players from coming over the middle and those that do will be short-arming passes in anticipation of the hit; (c) a vast majority of his play will be "in the box" where he will be effectively like a linebacker; (d) he's got incredible speed, which will allow him to make up for any delayed reactions...and that will be more so true because he will have fewer assignments covering WRs.
Personally, even if the doesn't become the next Dawkins or Sean Taylor, I think we got a steal...few players have the upside that Mays does.
