We are for sure drafting at least 2 OL in the draft IMO. I think we like Winters and Graham to develop for LB, I see us picking up a cheaper guy who is also good at special teams and draft one in the later rounds

They changed the rules on that a few years back. The June thing is now just a formality. You can cut a guy at the beginning of the league year, but designate him a June cut. He will be on the market tomorrow or Wednesday.

Re: 2024 Off-Season
Gross-Matos seems like a pretty solid, if not exciting, pick-up. A PFF analyst called him the Panthers' most improved player and had a 65.2 PFF grade as a pass rusher and 66.4 as a run defender. Seems like a guy the Niners can use in either run or pass situations while they can use Floyd more in passing situations to limit the usage on his 31-year old body.

I saw some highlights of him lining up right where AA did quite often.

Re: 2024 Off-Season
Once Armstead left, I had hoped that we might retain Kinlaw on the cheap. Definitely need some talent at DT. Not a bad draft for it, but probably need at least one or two DTs in FA.

Re: 2024 Off-Season
PFF not a big fan of our moves, especially Gross-Matos. That said, pretty strong argument he was playing out of position as the big DE in a 3-4. He should be a better fit as a base DE in a 4-3, and could surprise. Still, decent chunk of change for a guy who hasn't done much to date in his career. Tools seem to be there, though. Good size, great length, good jumps. Oddly, he didn't do any of the movement drills, though. Even the 40.

Thought our moves have been fine thus far none of the contracts so far are going to be an albatross and cause cap issues.
Floyd is the best pass rusher we've had opposite of Bosa since Ford and he's proven to be durable and consistent. It's the two things we've desperately needed for a while now at the spot.
Gross is an overpay but given his age and potential it could end up as ultimately a good contract. He might be one of those types that teams are higher on than fans because teams study the film and probably feel like he can be better in their system then the one he was in. He could end up being our next Arden Key and if he busts again it's not like it's a devasting cap hit or anything.

This team under Shanahan is rarely going to spend significant money on OL in FA so expect more of the depth kind of moves with that position group as they usually do. Maybe they take a flier on David Bakhtiari as he likely won't command a lot given his injury history.
As loud as I've been at wanting them to revamp the offensive line I actually don't take issue with them not addressing it in FA. The value you get from getting offensive line in FA is probably the worst out of any position group sans QB.
Where I'm critical of the team is it not being more of a focus in the draft. In Shanahan's tenure we've used only one 1st and one 2nd rounder on the position group and off-hand I'm not even sure if they've used a 3rd on the group at all but could be wrong on that one.
Yet we'll use two 3rd rounders on RBs that had 0 impact, a kicker, a TE that they basically redshirted, and etc. It's like out of all the position groups it's the one you should overdraft because it's arguably the most important position group in the game and if the philosophy is not to spend significant money on it then I would think you would want an infusion of talent in the group year after year to replace the talent you're going to let hit free agency.
LB seems like another position they are comfortable drafting and developing and to their credit it is one position group they've been good at doing so.

Re: 2024 Off-Season
Fair, but now I'm concerned they are going DT in the first round despite the need at OL. They win the SB last year with a better OL.Jikkle wrote:RIPskaterdude wrote:A bit surprised there hasn't been a priority to LB or OL yet

Well said. You aren't going to get the OL help you need during FA. The only guys available at a decent price are the same type of guys on the team already but none would be an improvement. The trade the 49ers made for Tomlinson years back is kinda rare where you get an underperforming lineman and he turns it around. They have to use more draft capital on the oline.

Team needs another QB now. One that can actually compete with Purdy.

All you talk about is QB. You hate Purdy, move on.

Re: 2024 Off-Season
We don't need a QB2 that can compete with Purdy, but Allen shouldn't be the QB2 for a SB caliber team

Wouldn’t mind seeing what Kyle could mold Zach Wilson into.

We need another QB, likely a vet to fill the role Darnold played last season. But right now I think the clear priority is on OL, DT, LB (depending on how much time Greenlaw misses) and DB's.
