The art, science and truth about 40-yard times

I feel like a link to this article is all I'm going to start using when people continue to ask me why I don't take their opinion into account if they didn't actually watch a guy run with their own two eyes.

Re: 2017-18 CFB SEASON / '18 NFL DRAFT

Goff the guy - on and off the field - disqualified himself from my endorsement. I wouldn't have wanted to work with him. I don't think I could even with the football acumen going for me had I been able to get beyond the off-the-field, personality stuff. Wasn't a fit for me as a football guy. McVay is/was his saving grace and the biggest reason why he scares me a bit now with some of Goff's physical gifts being a smaller, underlying reason.
I'll continue to say that Rosen the guy isn't my typical guy at the quarterback spot, and there's only a few times in history I've advocated for a quarterback with make up concerns like his, and he scares me as much, if not more than the exceptions in the past, but I would still probably swing for the fences on his upside and hope I can find someone else that can work with him better than I could if I had the decision to make. I like his pure football throwing ability THAT much. And that's not even touching the build/body stuff that also isn't my typical preference at that spot either but again it shows what I think about his pure throwing ability.
Lastly. Rarely do I read pieces on guys and end up feeling better or worse about my own evaluation on a guy but quite often Cosell is one of those guys I can read and when I get done if it jives with something I had already thought I have to admit that it'll make me feel a hair better about my initial evaluation.

Report: NFL eventually could put draft on NBC and CBS, too
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/04/17/report-nfl-eventually-could-put-draft-on-nbc-and-cbs-too/
I know as a draft guy I should probably encourage more people to like it because, in theory, it should make for more eyeballs and all that entails but truthfully I liked it FAR better and had MORE fun with it when fewer people were into it and it was on a much, much smaller scale and didn't last as many days.

Re: 2017-18 CFB SEASON / '18 NFL DRAFT
He didn't play football until his senior season of high school. Only 1 Division 1 offer. 19 sacks as a high school senior. Academic Excellence Award winner. Scout.com Freshman All-American 2nd team selection (7.5 sacks with 3 blocked kicks). Followed that up with 2 injury-plagued seasons due to a shoulder injury.
Long arms. Very good natural athlete and a talented pass rusher from the start. Finally became more of a well-rounded player his last season by showing up more on 1st and 2nd downs as a run stopper but he still needs work. Still looks like he doesn't know what he's doing all the time within the confines of the scheme of his defense. Light on his feet with good movement skills
He majored in informatics & technology and minored in Africana studies.
The shoulder stuff is fairly concerning/scary considering how long it lasted and the time it cost him. How clear cut that is I don't know but it's a big piece of the puzzle with him.
If you watch him get drafted on NFL Network watch what Mike Mayock says about him. He's been all over the place on him over the months, sometimes shifting from a good review to a bad review and then back to a good review depending on who he's talking to. I don't doubt that he's seen a ton of him, and he's kind of a difficult projection because of the lack of PT, but it's a minor note on Mayock/Turay as we get closer to the actual draft telecast.

Cappa scheduled to work out for 49ers
http://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/cappa-scheduled-work-out-49ers
Want a quick summary of what I've seen with Cappa?
Watch his feet. When his feet are good and they're moving, he wins. When his feet are sloppy and they stop, he loses. He doesn't have the physical development yet to get himself out of trouble the way a lot of guys can. Needs a really good, defined strength program that he's interested in.
If I put him up vs. some other small school players I've seen in the past, though, he's really, really good vs. them. Some of the best small school stuff I've seen. But that makes for some interesting projections because some of the guys he faced were laughable.
Has all-time good demeanor, too. It reminds me of a young Daniel Kilgore in school.

Is this gonna turn out to be like Byron Jones who you said was the best CB in the draft, and I said "LOL, that guy's a safety prospect in the NFL (before anyone else said anything to that respect)," and then said, "I'm clearly better than you at this?"![]()
...BTW, this is nothing against Christian Campbell. I have to see more of him. But I think you've achieved homer status.

Bumping an opinion where you said Byron Jones is the best CB in the draft doesn't help your cause when he's going to play his first snap at CB his 4th year into his career.
This was the draft with Marcus Peters, BTW.
I took the ceiling on Jones. Now we can actually see a player with Olympian talent develop at his NATURAL position. CB ranks that year were Jones, Peters, Amos, Waynes, K. Johnson. That's better than a great majority who do it for a living. Let's not even try to compare CB evaluations. Even way back when....

Lamar Jackson - QB - Cardinals
Pro Football Focus's Steve Palazzolo believes that the narrative that Louisville QB Lamar Jackson can't work through progressions is false.
This is one of the most common -- and in our opinion, laziest -- narratives about Jackson, and it's good to hear someone like Palazzolo put it to rest, so to speak. "Jackson has no problem sitting in the pocket and surveying the field," he writes. "In fact, he had the second-highest percentage of passes in which he got to a second/third read in the class, and he had the fourth-highest accuracy percentage among the 10 quarterbacks with advanced charting." Palazzolo also notes that the myth that Jackson just "scrambles around" is incorrect, too, as 73 percent of his rushing yards came on designed run plays. We hope NFL teams are paying attention to this, because it seems most of the negatives on Jackson are based on borderline false information.

Quenton Nelson - G - Fighting Irish
Pro Football Focus's Steve Palazzolo believes that the narrative that Notre Dame's Quenton Nelson is the best guard prospect in years is true.
Some have even gone so far as to call Nelson the best guard prospect since former New England Patriot and Hall Of Famer John Hannah. Palazzolo notes that the former Golden Domer doesn't have a weakness, and he can dominate as both a pass and run blocker. "Nelson’s 94.6 overall grade is the second-highest we’ve seen from a guard in four years of grading," writes Palazzolo, "but it’s the top mark among players from Power-5 caliber teams."

Baker Mayfield - QB - Sooners
Pro Football Focus's Steve Palazzolo believes that the narrative that had easy throws to complete at Oklahoma is true.
As Palazzolo mentions, the Oklahoma offense is set up to give their quarterbacks easy-to-complete throws, and Mayfield completed those passes. A lot. He had the highest percentage of completely open throws of any quarterback Pro Football Focus scouted. "However, this should not be the end of the analysis," writes Palazzolo. "Our data has shown the the most stable measure of quarterback accuracy is the ability to hit open throws, and Mayfield is the best in the class in this regard, especially when throwing the ball down the field." Palazzolo also notes that Mayfield was the most accurate in tight-window throws, so even if the above narrative is true, it doesn't speak to Mayfield's ability to throw.

Saquon Barkley - RB - Player
ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said "it feels inevitable" that the Giants will use the No. 2 overall pick on Penn State RB Saquon Barkley.
Giants beat writers have been suggesting for weeks now that the team is leaning away from a quarterback at No. 2, and that would leave Barkley, EDGE Bradley Chubb, and OL Quenton Nelson as the cream of the crop among non-passers. "I've heard very strongly that there are important people in the building who believe in Barkley and being a physical, run-first team," McShay said Wednesday. "Barkley can be the face of the team for the next 10 years." The Giants seem to be all-in on going for it again with a clearly-in-decline 37-year-old Eli Manning.

Saquon Barkley - RB - Player
According to Sports Illustrated's Ben Baskin, Penn State RB Saquon Barkley's agents don't want him to be picked by the Browns.
Barkley is represented by Roc Nation, which is headquartered in New York City, and the firm prefers Barkley is picked No. 2 by the Giants, landing the star running back smack-dab in the media capital of the world. According to Baskin, Barkley's agents have gone as far to advise Barkley to refuse to play in Cleveland, but Barkley "never considered" those demands. He's said he's willing to play wherever, including Cleveland. The Browns are an extreme long shot to take Barkley No. 1, but if he slips past the Giants at No. 2, there's a chance Cleveland would snag him at No. 4.

That wasn't the reason for the link. The link is there to show evidence of my long track record at evaluating CBs. With regularity I can find a sleeper prospect no pundits behind him and tell you he's going to be good, unlike most here.
