49ers fans well remember how much of a turnaround Harbaugh and staff had in their first season with the 49ers.

Not only did York screw up choosing Baalke over Harbaugh, he chose that mumbling idiot over Fangio. He could have retained a couple others from Harbaugh's staff.

49ers would still have a better chance now to win titles if they kept Harbaugh, got rid of Baalke.

At least it would have been nice to bring Fangio back as DC under Shanahan. His " system " wasn't a great fit but it can't be any worse than it is now. The one good thing about having someone like Fangio is there is a good chance he will last awhile. These young successful DCs we've had get poached right away.

Purdy has looked a lot more like Kyle Boller this year than he has Brady.

I am not arguing that Purdy is Brady. The only reason I have ever brought up that comparison is when you start talking about players being better because they have more physical talent, and Brady was not a physically gifted player.

I also am not opposed to bringing in Jones if he'd come here, though at this point I think that would be a surprise (though if Purdy's injury is serious, maybe not).

But saying Jones might challenge Purdy for snaps is a joke. Jones is all physical talent, lacking all of the intangibles that make Purdy a very good NFL QB. The talent is important, but it only goes so far when you don't understand and can't see the NFL game (see: Lance, Trey). It's possible Jones could turn it around, but it's exceedingly unlikely to happen this year.

All you have to do is look at Darnold to see that if you put a guy with talent into a good situation he can succeed. Darnold looks like he’s passed Purdy to me.

Harbaugh is a very effective short-term coach. It's not clear he has staying power, especially at the NFL level. And once the talent McCloughan had brought in dried up, he was only okay.

Pretty big stretch to say we'd have a better chance to win a title under Harbaugh. He was 1-2 in the NFCCG and 0-1 in the SB. Granted we should have beaten the Giants. Shanahan is 2-2 in the NFCCG, and both losses came with QB injuries (Purdy knocked out, and Garoppolo a shell of himself with the hurt shoulder). Admittedly 0-2 in the SB, but I don't knock a guy for getting to the SB and losing. Not to mention Harbaugh lost to Flacco vs. an officiating-aided Mahomes.

Darnold was a guy with good vision and physical talent who couldn't play under pressure. Somewhat similar to Goff, though the tools are better. If you put that sort of a player behind a good pass-blocking OL with good receiving weapons, they can be very effective. If you have a good defense opposite them, they can be very good. Granted Purdy has had the same advantages for most of his career - though the defense was pretty bad in the playoffs last year.

But Daniel Jones is not that sort of player. He hasn't shown that he gets it when things go right. He doesn't have good vision. He's not particularly accurate. And those players tend not to make it in the league. We'll see, but I'd take Brock for a long, successful NFL career over him at this point, and it's not close.

Shanahan team has peaked, talk about staying power.

I don't see the team being any better next season. Roster will just be older and more expensive, so injuries or decline or whatever, they are unlikely to be much better or certainly anything like the 2023 team at midseason.

Unless they hit an absolute grand slam in the offseason, get like 3 or 4 very good starters from the next draft with one guy having the kind of impact Bosa had as a rookie.

This team is now getting dominated physically. That's what Harbaugh brings, if he's not undermined by the **** ownership and the GM.

Like I said, other teams in the division have been loading up on top 5 and top 10 picks. That's going to make the talent base uncompetitive.

Fangio would never come back here. Let's hope that Shanahan can attract better assistant coaches at least. Because it seems that it's no longer the case.

Yes, Purdy has played his entire career with Kyle and the Avengers. We’re finally seeing what he looks like without them and it’s honestly exactly what I thought it would be. Very mid.

Playing with a crappy.oline, crappy defense. And his QBR is still higher than Darnolds who has all day tp throw behind his line.

Purdy and Kittle have been the only bright spots on offense. Sometimes he is doing it all by himself, oline can't give him enough time more than 50% of drop backs, his receivers can't separate, his coach hasn't adjusted to defenses at all, and his defense can't keep a lead. Purdy has not been mid at all

I liked Harbaugh I just didn't like Roman and I thought he and Kaepernick not taking the next step in development were two of the biggest reasons for the team sliding the way it did towards the end.

The drama behind the scenes didn't help either.

Roman in a weird way is just like Shanahan where they are brilliant minds when it comes to the run but pretty run of the mill with the passing attack. It's that fact that might be the reason we didn't get more titles because I'd argue if Shanahan had a more balanced approach with his offense instead of completely building the offensive line around running the ball with no regards to their ability to pass block along with building a WR corp that mainly excels at YAC we might have at least one maybe two rings under him.

If Harbaugh stayed, maybe he wouldn't have found another QB to replace Kaepernick by now. Hell it would be over a decade with the team so unlikely he'd still be here unless he won one or two SBs.

But going forward, assuming that the team needed to rebuild, I know which one I'd want to run the team. Harbaugh never had the power that Shanahan has had in personnel. Baalke was at war with him, not to mention York.

Harbaugh would have made the team physical, which the 49ers no longer are. He probably would have attracted better assistants than Wilks, Sorrenson and whoever the Special Teams coach is.

If and when the team needs to rebuild, would you want Shanahan to be in charge? This is his 8th season. Even if they started the rebuild this offseason, he would be well over a decade with the team to see any results.

How many coaches get to remain in the job over a decade without winning it all?

Time to look for a young ambitious assistant who's never been HC before. Kyle was that 8 years ago. It's clear he can't make the team champions.

I don't think we should move on from Shanahan, but he's got to make some pretty dramatic changes through the end of this year and into the offseason. This team is much too good to be playing the way that they are.

They say NFL football is a game of inches. A lot of teams that enjoy sustained success have been able to do so by doing the little things. Playing mistake-free football. Committing to an identity on both sides of the ball. Having clear assignments and executing them. This team is lightyears away from that.

Every week, we are seeing significant, glaring mistakes that are just entirely head-scratching. Stupid penalties (false starts, too many men on the field, etc.), awful tackling, poor ball security, running the same defense over and over on third-and-long despite the fact it clearly isn't working. To some extent, these are individual mistakes. But when you see all of these mistakes over and over again, committed by numerous members of the FO and the players, it goes to coaching.

Shanahan has never been a particularly buttoned-up guy. We've always had a fair bit of poor discipline or inopportune mistakes. But it has spun out of control this year, and Shanahan seems almost powerless to stop it. First and foremost, we need to move on from our two coordinators. Schneider is AWFUL. We get significant mistakes from our STs unit every single game. And Sorenson just doesn't seem to have the answers. This defense is so bad in critical situations (3rd and 4th down and in the 4th quarter). We can't get stops. He hasn't had a long time, but I'm ready to move on.

This is not to exempt the offense. There has been so much about the offense that is infuriating. We drafted a first-round WR despite glaring needs at other positions. We lost Aiyuk, and yet we've gone two full games without attempting a pass in Pearsall's direction. That's despite him getting open fairly regularly. Why did we take him with that pick if we aren't going to use him? Why can't we find anyone to challenge Brendel, who may be the worst pass-blocking center in the league? Why, when we're struggling to run to the outside, aren't we banging Mason up the middle more? Why do we have four TEs on the roster when we're replacing Kittle (last week) with an OT?

Anyway, it's all bad right now, and it's reminding me of Kyle's first two years when, prior to Jimmy, we seemed to underperform our talent level (even though that level wasn't great). Especially if we're contemplating giving Purdy $60 million a year, we need Kyle to get this team to overperform the talent level. Not really holding my breath....

Re: Harbaugh vs. Shanahan, it's important to keep in mind that Fangio was with Harbaugh his entire tenure. So was Roman. Most successful coaches have to replace coordinators. Harbaugh was very fortunate that he did not have to.

If we give Purdy $60 milly it won't matter who the coach is.
