I mean, the kid went 8-0, won two playoff games, and was having success against that Eagles' D when he got injured. I have concerns about Purdy's ceiling, but saying he'll never sniff a chance at winning a ring is absurd given that he took us to the NFC Championship game as a rookie.

He did all of that because he had the most elite weapons in the league & a top 5 defense. He rarely had to throw the ball more than 10 yards or pick up yards with his legs.

He shows excellent anticipation, he sets and resets with incredible quickness and reads and delivers quickly. He often looks second level before first, and most importantly he’s almost always on time. There’s a lot there to like. His upside is getting to know the offence and players, his downside is being scouted better and, yeah, he doesn’t have a cannon. But he has as much arm as many of the guys who became great qbs using the skills I mentioned above. My biggest concern, really, is that Kyle’s desire for an automaton will kill the gunslinger out of his game.

So if Purdy went 8-0 with 2 playoff wins due to the other weapons on the team, what was your expected record with a "good" QB? How much better than 8-0 were you projecting for Lance under the same circumstances? The logic is missing...

You could say all of these same things about Kirk Cousins.

It's not really about what Lance "did" because any qb can have a good stretch of games, especially when they are surrounded by elite talent. It's more about the fact that he is extremely limited in his abilities, and is bound to regress back to the mean when defenses adjust and the team has to deal with injuries. So, the logic is more about what he's capable of going forward.

Yea, but we're basing that on a tiny 10 game sample size. He never even had any close games where he had to put together a game winning drive. And let's be honest, the team wasn't beating the Eagles even if he didn't get hurt in that game.

Not a star. But unlike Lance can read a defense and go through progressions and play QB the way Shanahan wants it played. Lance.losing to Sam Darnold tells you all you need to know

Thats because Purdy played 4 years of college ball and Lance played 1. Lance needs reps to be able to read a defense and go through progressions.

The 49ers want wim now, not way for a long shot qg to hopefully learn those things. He tried to make the leap from 6 to 10

Pretty damn close last year in his rookie year. I still don't understand where noodle arm comes from? He makes 10-20 yard throws pretty easily. We don't take a lot of deep shots as an offense so we really don't know how he is with deeper passes. One try I remember last year he hit Kittle on a deep pass in the end zone pretty easily (45 yards).

Pretty close is what Shanahan does best. Hell, he took Jimmy fuggin G to within a play of winning the SB. The whole reason that they drafted Trey was so that they could have a guy who had the physical abilities to get them over the hump. Purdy is just going back to the safe thing that Kyle knows works for him... but will fail when it comes down to nut crunching time.

The Niners will win now, but their ceiling is limited due to Purdy's physical limitations. This is the whole reason that the team wanted to move on from Jimmy G to a QB like Lance who has athleticism.

Why is Purdy so "extremely limited in his abilities?"
What do you want him to do that you think he is incapable of doing for this team?

He's short, he has a noodle arm & he's not a dual threat because he doesn't have elite speed or size to be a runner. Literally nothing about him is elite. He's no better than Garnder Minshew.

Purdy will never be able to make the play that Mahomes did against the 49ers, springing way back and throwing way down field and having Tyreke Hill win the ball over a couple of 49ers DBs.

But he may not necessarily have to.

We still have to see him against an elite defense. Would have been good to see him play the whole game vs. the Eagles.

But the strength of those teams -- the Chiefs is another defense which might challenge the 49ers -- is great pass rush, including right up the middle where the 49ers OL is weak.

He is 1 inch shorter than Mahomes, why does he need to be a dual threat? You keep saying noodle arm with no evidence. We have no idea what he might be elite at, he has played 8 games.

When he figures it out? You mean IF he figures it out and that is a big if. He barely played in college let alone the NFL. There is a good chance he never figures it out. If he had such a great upside teams would have been breaking the 49ers door down trying to get him. They would have gotten better than a 4th round pick

Purdy is 6' 5/8" and Mahomes is a legit 6'2", so no, he's more than 1 inch shorter. Mahomes also has a much bigger frame compared to little Brock. He doesn't need to be a dual threat, but he needs to be elite in something. You are right when you say that we have no idea what he is elite at... because if he was elite at something we would have already known what it was by now.

That's not entirely true. He carried a struggling defense against the Raiders, putting together a late-game drive to go up by 7 with just over two minutes remaining, and when the Raiders responded with a score to tie, he engineered a hurry-up drive for the win, but Gould missed the 41-yard kick. From a QB standpoint he rose to the challenge.

As for the Eagles, they scared me last year. They were a great team that matched up really well with our weaknesses. But our D did an excellent job of containing them - especially if Kyle had challenged that damn 4th down Devonta Smith drop - until the offensive miscues became overwhelming. That fumble just before half really salted the game away. No way that happens with Purdy. He almost certainly doesn't lose that ball, and if he did, I guarantee he would have gotten on top of it.

Return to San Francisco 49ers
