Work in progress = 9 more penalties (at least one that was garbage) and multiple other mistakes of the same variety.

I'm rarely, if ever, going to be the guy that says a stat like this more because I think it will happen than just to throw it out there but if the 49ers beat the Steelers next week, they'll be 3-0 for the first time since......1998.
Might surprise some of the folks that don't have the memory to go back to the Mariucci days (he did it in his 2nd season) or even the Harbaugh days. For Harbaugh, they had the chance to do it in 2012 and lost to Minnesota 24-13.

Tony Dungy: "A lot of people are talking about what Kyle Shanahan has done for that organization but let's not forget about one of my former players, John Lynch, who has done a wonderful job putting together that roster."
Uh, yeah, I don't think so.
I still don't think Shanahan is the answer/leader long-term but if you want the chance to potentially help Shanahan become a better coach, you get rid of Lynch asap and deal with the power he's still probably going to command with another GM. But I understand the feelings he has towards Lynch and isn't going to see it any other way until he can't defend it any more.

https://www.bengals.com/news/bengals-blending-past-and-future-in-biggest-venture-ever
- As in years past, if the Bengals are going to drop money on anyone a) it’s most likely going to be on their own player or b) it’s going to be at a premium position, usually the edge like offensive tackles, pass rushers, wide receivers. Guards and safeties need not apply.
Troy Blackburn does a lot of the free-agent deal making and he offered two perspectives this week. One for a deal that did happen for right tackle Bobby Hart and one for a deal that didn’t happen for Bucs linebacker Kwon Alexander. Alexander is one of those speed linebackers the Bengals desperately need and it didn’t get past the initial phone call even though new senior assistant Mark Duffner stood on the table for one of his position players in Tampa the last three years. Not at north of $14 million per year.
“He’s played one full year out of four,” Blackburn said. “Good athlete and we’ve got coaches connected with him that talk positively about him. Does that make him a $14- 15 million a year guy? Wow. We hear everything the fans say. We understand it, we respect it, we process it. But remember. We have a finite set of options we can pursue.”
That’s why they ended up re-signing Hart as their starting right tackle even though the web sites graded him down allowing 10 sacks and a league-high false starts. And even though among fans he was as popular as higher taxes.

I like seeing that sort of rotation along the DL. It pays dividends in games, and should pay even more as the season progresses.

That’s actually a good trade for the Dolphins. The Steelers are going to end up having a bad season. A top 10 pick to the Dolphins

Yep. Ben's out, so that pick could even be top 5.
Would've loved to have traded for him. A guy like him could put the Niners' defense into best-in-the-NFL territory.
Jaylen Ramsey is available...

Man, that's a lot to give up. And a very risky move for the Steelers given their prospects for this season. Maybe they'll trade their second for Beathard. Hahahahaha.

Re: 49ers regular season game notes
I was talking to a colleague about Staley's injury and looked at the Niners' schedule for the first time in a while. The good news is that even taking a pretty pessimistic view of things, I think we start 5-3. That's losses to the Browns, Rams, and Panthers, and I think there's a fair chance we win one or two of those. We get the wins we have, Steelers, at Cards, and at Redskins (early start). 5-3 is almost a worst-case.
The bad news is that we hit an absolutely brutal slate starting in week ten. Packers, at Ravens, at Saints, Falcons, Rams, and at Seahawks. We could easily go 1-5 or 2-4 for that span, though it's hard to gauge the Ravens to date given their level of competition, and project where the Saints will be if/when Brees returns.
At least it should make for an interesting run, though, and if we can stay moderately healthy, gain confidence and cut down on the mental errors, this team should be able to compete with any of those teams late in the year.
