No problem giving Kyle that extension but not for John. A better GM not only understands filling needs and depth as well as keeping Kyle in check from making questionable or foolish requests. The current GM is either a puppet for the HC or is just plain stupid. Kicker in the 3rd round Lol

This backs up the eye test. Sorenson was either unwilling or unable to make any adjustments. He insisted on constantly rushing 4, and lived with the super common results on not getting pressure on the QB.

And of course, this is just the surface of the problems with Sorenson. Dude needs to go.

Forgot to mention in my earlier post that I think we only forced one INT and two turnovers after the bye, so it's not even like we were playing more aggressively to generate big plays on defense. We had a few dropped INTs (at least two against the Rams), and some bad luck forcing but not recovering fumbles, but that is also just an unforgivable stat.

Meanwhile, the offense turned it over in seven of nine games, and had 2+ turnovers in at least three games.

Maiocco - who is about as plugged in as anyone - says the past few weeks have changed his thinking, and he now thinks it is unlikely that Sorensen and Schneider will be back. Fantastic news.

Most basic blitzes of all time, have Warner or another LB at the LOS and blitz him. not creative at all

Maybe this is just an updated stage of grief, but I’ll almost be angrier if Schneider is fired now because it will disprove the only explanation that ever made any sense for his continued tenure; major kompromat on Kyle and/or Jon. If it turns out this has been an option all along, wtf are we even doing? Kyle’s a fantastic coach, but his blind spots are **** black holes.

If the defense showed any signs of an improvement over the course of the year I'd say there would be a chance for Sorensen to return but you can't really point to any area and say we were better week 1 vs week 18.

When it came to Ryans and Wilks they started a bit rough early and figured it out more and more as the season went on. I didn't see any of that kind of improvement from Sorensen this season.

I mean if they want to give the impression that all the problems were due to a couple of position coaches and injuries, that smells like scapegoating.

Unfortunately I don't see the team bouncing back to their previous heights, unless they really luck out in the draft.

I agree and I think fans cling a little too hard to the injury excuse.

We simply got outcoached in all 3 phases and the team played undisciplined football way too much.

The lack of fundamentals and playing sound disciplined football was one of the biggest things that bothered me this season. It shouldn't matter what string you are in there is no excuse for mental errors and poor fundamentals like bad tackling.

He is more of a facilitator than a GM. This is what Jed wanted when he was hired. Jed basically wanted something different after Baalke who was a control freak and feuded with every head coach during his tenure at GM. Jed basically said after Baalke he wanted something along the lines of what Seattle had with Schneider and Carroll. He wanted a collaborative approach between the head coach and GM. Kyle was even brought in before Lynch. During the GM search after Kyle was hired at least a couple of upper level GM candidates turned down interview requests with the 49ers. I am sure the reason being they wanted to hire their own HC and did not want to cede control to Kyle.

I don't think that is what they are trying to do and most people don't actually believe that. And I don't think they are going to air all the team's issues publicly, especially when it comes to the roster. But over the course of the offseason everyone will know what they really believe based on what they do.

Agree. I (want to) believe that ShanaLynch sees the solution as a multi-prong approach: several coaching changes, better injury luck (or training staff changes; I don't recall this number of injuries when we had the trainers Harbaugh had), and key player personnel changes. I don't think all the missed tackles on defense or the missed blocks by the OL were all just due to bad coaching schemes; at some point we need players who can tackle and block. A lot of our issues were caused by losing the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Glad to see Schneider finally gone after at least three seasons of poor STs play. Sorenson is the next one on the chopping block.

Grant Cohn wrote an absolutely idiotic article kind of defending Sorenson - mostly as a vehicle to take shots at Shanahan. And look, Shanahan deserves plenty of criticism. But for reasons discussed at length earlier in this thread, Sorenson just has to go. He was AWFUL.

Apparently Greenlaw made some social media posts which casts doubts on his future with the 49ers.

Figured this was more appropriate here than in the offseason thread. Kittle was absolutely robbed of the all pro team. That's just a disgrace. Bowers had an awesome season, especially for a rookie, but Kittle only 88 fewer yards, and had three more TDs, on 61 (!!!) fewer targets. And he's the better blocker by a mile. Hopefully it doesn't matter all that much to these guys, but it's definitely something that comes up in HOF discussions, and there's just no objective argument for Bowers on this one IMO.
