Pre-GB game, I heard some people saying hes absolutely going to command a 1st round pick. I thought that might be excessive but looking at the deals for Wentz and Darnold it doesn't seem to far fetched.

A 1st would be amazing, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

I'm hoping for a 2nd, but thinking its going to something like a 3rd this season + a 4th next season.

But there are going to be quite a few teams in the QB market this offseason, and the draft class isn't looking real promising. So all it takes is 2 teams to get antsy and create a bidding war.

If Ford retires and Jimmy is traded, what does the cap sheet look like this upcoming season? Obviously it depends on the new contacts for Bosa, Jones, Deebo. But generally speaking.

What are the real holes that need to be patched? We basically need to add a #1 corner, a safety and then possibly center and G (if Mack is gone and Banks is a bust)? After that its mostly just filling out depth.

Am I missing something else?

Using rough estimates based off Spotrac, subtracting Jimmy and Ford would have the 9ers about $34 under the cap.

A portion of that will be allocated to signing the draft class, although it won't be much considering they don't have a 1st round pick and all the other picks will be very late in each round.

Laken Tomlinson is a free agent, so you either need to extend him or find a replacement LG.
RG is a huge hole. Hopefully Banks can fill it, but color me quite skeptical.
As you mentioned C could be a hole depending on what Mack does.
They need AT LEAST 2 CB's. Not just the #1 you mentioned, but they need to replace K'Waun who is a FA. Really they need 3 CBs
What are they going to do with Mostert? Mitchell was a pleasant surprise, buts its already clear he can't stay healthy and needs his touches limited, Sermon isn't inspiring, so they need to do something at RB.
Jennings was a pleasant surprise. But they still have nothing after the top 3 receivers.
Kittle is the only TE worth mentioning.
DJ Jones is a FA, will be likely get paid by somebody. He's of high importance to the DL.
Tartt is likely gone. Hopefully Hufanga can fill his role, but that remains to be seen
Arden Key had a nice comeback year and will be looking to get paid
Al-Shaair stepped up nicely and will also be looking to get paid for the 1st time in his career
There are 6 Total Free agent DL (Jones, Key, Hurst, Willis, Street, Givens) So Depth will need to be addressed

Yeah, we don't have any big-ticket FAs, but lots of role players and quality depth. Tons of solid DL as you mention, three of five OL to close out the year (Tomlinson, Compton, and Brunskill, though the latter is a RFA for some reason), etc. That said, none of those guys except maybe Jones will command anything close to big money at their positions. Key probably leaves, Hurst might stay as his value has got to be depressed. Willis seems like the sort of guy who would want some stability and might take less to stay here. Givens is restricted.

The takeaway is that we'll probably return a roster that is at least comparable to what we had this year. But we'll need guys to step up. Maybe McKivitz goes inside to guard. Maybe Moore develops - he's also a candidate to move inside. We could really use Lenoir coming along, and there are almost always at least a handful of solid slot corners who don't get the money they're worth. We definitely need to add some players, and hopefully get something decent for Jimmy and nail our picks. But I don't expect a dramatic decline, or anything like that unless it's due to QB play.

Yeah Tomlinson and Jones should be the biggest priorities.

Because the CB situation is so bleak, a big part of me wants to make another roll the dice on Verrett. But that bet is likely to come up snake eyes again due to his health. So it would need to be a low base salary with built in performance/snap count incentives to make me feel good about bringing him back.

But you are right overall, most of the free agents are depth pieces. We are fortunate that most of the core players are currently locked into long term contracts and there is still enough $ on the table to lock up the other core guys like Deebo and Bosa. That said, quality depth is still a vital piece to good NFL teams. And that will be a concern going into this offseason.

I'd certainly consider bringing back Verrett, we just can't count on him. He needs to be our fifth or sixth guy, and as said, it needs to be an incentive-laden deal. We'll see. But we need to add several other players at the position regardless.

Read on Twitter

Jimmy is set to undergo thumb surgery and will have a 4-6 week recovery period.

Shoudn't be a much of a deterrent to his trade situation, if any.

To summarize Jimmy G's career with the niners: year 1 he takes an 0-10 team to 6 straight wins. Two of the next 4 years he does not finish the season due to injuries. The other 2 he takes them to a 10 point 4th quarter lead in the super bowl and the NFL championship game. The dude has been a high level winner. Thanks Jimmy.

I'd still love to see a second and something more. Not sure how likely it is, but Alex Smith netted two seconds, and I think Garoppolo is better (granted he's relatively pricier).

Good point.

I think Pittsburgh makes sense for both Jimmy and the Steelers.

I guess the detractors would point out that he wasn't exactly "taking" the team anywhere in the playoffs. Frankly, in both playoff runs, it sure felt like the team was taking him. Look, arguably no position in the major sports is more important to a team's success than NFL QB, and Jimmy has won at a remarkable clip as a starting QB while his replacements (granted almost exclusively marginal players) have struggled. But whether because of coaching decisions or his own shortcomings, he hasn't exactly been leading his team to victory in the playoffs, and both times he was asked to mount very reasonable comebacks, he flopped in dramatic and resounding fashion.

First round pick seems high to me. I could see Darnold getting more because of his age and some team seeing potential in him and the Jets holding him back. I don't remember what Wentz got.

In the Super Bowl that 40+ yard bomb to Kittle just before the half was an absolutely beautiful ball. Unfortunately it got called back to a ridiculously weak offensive PI called on Kittle. If that doesn't get called 9ers are set up at the 13 yard line with 2 TO's left, all but guaranteed to get at least 3 points there. Which would of had the 9ers taking the lead going into halftime, instead it was tied 10-10 at the half.

Would it have changed the outcome of the game, we'll never know. But that call certainly impacted that game.

Understood but a 10 point lead in the 4th is pretty good. Maybe you could consider that the defense let us down more than he did.

Looking forward to what our receivers can do with a qb who can stretch the field. Been missing the big pass play the last few years.

Darnold has always been trash, but you're right that his perceived "potential" inflated his appeal. Panthers traded a 2021 6th + 2022 2nd + 2022 4th. Which actually looks like a solid blueprint for a Garoppolo return.

Wentz was traded for a conditional first + a 3rd based on snap counts, which ended up being met. So Colts are giving the Eagles their 1st.

My primary point is that he doesn't make the championship games (SB or NFCCG) without the D and STs in either '19 or this year. He did virtually nothing in blowouts in '19, and he damn near cost us the Dallas game, and really did nothing significant to help us win at GB.

In the championship games, the D certainly let us down, but if we're going to credit Garoppolo for those leads, we have to credit the D, too. In the SB, we held KC to 10 points until there were six minutes left in the game. That is far better than anyone expected. Similarly, yesterday we (somehow, amazingly) held the Rams to 7 points into the fourth quarter, and to 14 points until there were just under seven minutes left to play. In either game, literally a single decent offensive drive probably wins the game for us.

That's not to say that the defense didn't let us down. They absolutely did in crunch time. But unlike Garoppolo, the D far exceeded expectations prior to crunch time. If Garoppolo had done the same, we would have won both games comfortably.

Conditional 1st round pick based on percentage of snaps played I believe which he hit

Ahh shoulda read this post before the one i made above. I knew it was a 1st and 3rd and one was conditional. Just thought it was the opposite.

Id settle for a 2nd and 3rd for Jimmy. If that 2nd could be from this year that would be fantastic. Say if we traded with the Steelers, that would give us what #52 and #61

Return to San Francisco 49ers
