Undrafted Free Agent Thread Round 2

Mike Balogun (LB) from Oklahoma listed at 6', 247 pounds. He couldn't play last season because NCAA took away his eligibility after he played in a semi-pro league. Could make special teams.

Image
Tramaine Brock (CB) from Belhaven College listed at 5'10, 194 pounds. He played for the University of Minnesota before leaving due to poor grades. Was a SS at Minnesota and apparently a hard hitter. I doubt he makes the team.

Image
Shay Hodge (WR) from Ole Miss listed at 6'1, 207 pounds. Had 70 catches and 1135 yards playing in the SEC. Chance he could be the 3rd or 4th option at WR.

Image
Keaton Kristick (LB) from Oregon State listed at 6'3, 230 pounds. NFL says Kristick is good in coverage and a sound tackler, but bites on play action and has a history of stingers. Don't think he makes the team loaded with quality LBs.

Image
Scott Long (WR) from Louisville listed at 6'2, 214 pounds. Long caught 53 balls for 727 yards in C-USA last season. Averaged 60.6 YPG receiving. Likely will compete for the 4th WR option with Shay Hodge and Jared Perry.

Image
Jared Perry (WR) from Missouri listed at 6'1, 180 pounds. Perry caught 46 balls for 696 yards in the Big 12. Missed the last 3 games of the season including Mizzou's bowl game. Averaged 69.6 YPG receiving. Will complete with Hodge and Long for the 4th WR option.

Frisco signed the wrong Missouri WR. I would have much, much rather have picked up Danario Alexander. Alexander was the #1 WR on Missouri's depth chart, ahead of Jeremy Maclin even. I think he even led the nation in yardage this season. Dude has just been plagued by serious injuries. I'm really quite surprised somebody didn't take a flier on him in the late rounds. I'm downright shocked he is still on the wire, and no team has picked him up as an UFA. That said, perhaps he is still recovering from his latest knee injury that he suffered in the senior bowl: he may not be able to pass a physical. If thats the case, he most definitely needs to be on the radar if/when he passes a physical.

Know pretty much nothing about all these guys. But maybe just maybe one of them will pan out and become a useful player.

Maybe the 49ers will also sign Alexander. Never hurts to have some WR competition especially when we only have Crabtree, Morgan and Jason Hill. Morgan should not be a #2 option for anyone.

^^ I would definitely like the 9ers to get an intimate/in depth look @ DA. If he has recovered from his latest knee injury and still has his athleticism, I have no doubts he would make the team. There is a reason why he was ahead of Maclin on the depth chart and led the nation in recieving last season.

Yeah I agree Morgan should most definitely not be a long term #2. Ginn will be somewhere in the WR mix, but where and and what capacity remains to be seen. Also Brandon Jones needs to do something, anything. I know he got hurt very early on last year, but to put it mildly he was invisible for the half of the season that he "played." That was/is a real head scratcher of a signing. Dude has never really did anything in this league, and they are cut him a pretty big check.

The only thing Brandon Jones did was help us lose momentum against Seattle by blowing a lateral on a punt. Why are the 49ers so terrible at signing WR's from free agency. I am glad we are looking at the draft and undrafted players to get a chance instead of the receivers we have been signing.

Ginn better be only fielding kickoff returns and punts. If he is playing WR out there we have problems.

I don't think it is a problem if Ginn is playing receiver. Just not a one or two receiver. But he is still a good deep threat and will help spread the field.

Yea, I meant that if he was the #2 option behind Crabtree.

Ginn can be used sparingly in the slot but I don't think he's a 1/2.

49ers just signed WR Bakari Grant (6'4", 195) from UC Davis. Doesn't hurt to try and find a gem in the rough at the WR position. 49ers need some quality depth at WR.

First off Ginn as the regular #2 is sickening. But as mentioned he is useable wideout and a decent deep threat. Dude needs to do something in the passing game, seeing as how Frisco absorbed a big amount of salary just to have him produce as a returner. This team still needs to find a long term #2.

As for the newly signed UFA, a local guy from a small school. Smells like camp fodder to me. Would still much rather of signed Danario. Only reason I can think of why he is still on the street is that he hasn't recovered yet and can't pass a physical.

Return to San Francisco 49ers
