"49ers | Manny Lawson not taking part in offseason workouts

San Francisco 49ers LB Manny Lawson has not been participating in the team's offseason workouts because he is not happy with his contract situation, sources have told Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com. Lawson is entering the final year of his contract and has not had any serious talks with 49ers about a new contract."

Got that off of KFFL. Does Manny Lawson really think he is worthy of a contract extension after his injuries and average play for SF?

Yeah he's about the equivelent of Azubuike to the niners. Decent player. But isnt a central asset to the team and can be traded or resigned for less than 3-4 a year.

Matt Maiocco also just reported that Lawson will most likely be allowed to enter free agency next season since the 49ers already have drafted McKillop and Bowman the past 2 seasons. I'm positive that Navorro Bowman can be equal or better than Manny Lawson.

To be fair, Lawson is missing the workouts because he's hoping to get his contract extended and the workouts aren't mandatory. So once they are, we'll see what happens. But with so many 49ers needing a new contract next year, Lawson will definitely be put at the bottom of the list.

Lawson is a huge heap of talent that hasn't materialized. He's so damn fast that he could be amazing coming off the outside in the 3-4, but like Boss Bailey it is obvious that speed isn't enough to be good as an OLB. You need to be cerebral to pick up runs and know when to pursue the QB.

Well Manny is coming off his best season of his career by far. So its probably in his best interest to try and push for an extension this offseason.

But in reality he is a bust of a 1st round pick. Mario Williams made Manny a lot of money. Once they got seperated Lawson, has left a lot to be desired. As mentioned he is a serviceable player, but I doubt he is being missed in workouts, and its probably better to give Bowman max reps anyways. Dude is easily replaceable. He won't bring anything good in a trade, like a 6th rounder at best I'm guessing. Or better yet maybe the brass can find a team that could use a LB and has a surplus of secondary talent, and do a player for player swap, much like the recent Carpenter for Barron swap. But I doubt something like that happens either. One thing is for sure though, he surely does not deserve a raise.

I like the idea of trading Lawson for a late pick like a 6th or 7th rounder. That would be really nice especially since the 49ers just drafted Navorro.
