Dashon Goldson has become a pretty integral part of the San Francisco 49ers defense. He's a bright spot in a secondary that needs to be upgraded this off season. He's a free agent, and he wants to stay with the team. Niners are receptive to the idea of keeping him around, despite needing to clear up some salary cap issues elsewhere on the roster.
Do you think Goldson will end up with the Niners next season? Should the team give him what he wants?

He's not gonna be worth what he gets, but he's integral to what we do. However, we need another safety to better complement him. A cover safety.

I'd love to see both of our safeties stick around for the future, but I honestly don't want to see us get into something over our heads by over-paying them (or anyone else for that matter) and screwing up our salary cap position. If we can afford to keep Goldson (and Whitner), then I'd love to see that happen.

I think we can if we get rid of Smith, as safeties tend to be paid not all that much. Otherwise no, doesn't look good.
With that in mind, we need to increase our subs and depth on defense. Last year it was a priority to bring depth to the offensive skill positions, this offseason it should be a priority to get depth along the front 3 and secondary.

I've heard rumors that if Goldson is resigned, Whitner might be a cap casualty

I'd be perfectly OK with cutting Whitner if it means we can re-sign Goldson. There are a lot of good safeties in the draft this year.

Also, Whitner just ain't that good.
We're looking good cap-wise, 2M under with Akers making 3M and Alex with a 9.5M deal.

I'm guessing the Alex money is going directly to Goldson

Why would it? DaShon was making 6.5M this past season (franchise tag) and assuming he gets the same (that's a lot for a safety) our cap still looks the same.

Just a FYI, Ed Reed is the highest paid safety in the NFL...at 7.2M. I think Goldson just wants a multi-year deal.

He wants to be paid top money, and I believe that if we did franchise him again, it would be around 8M this year, but I expect him to get 21M/3 year deal or something like that.

Which is about a 500k pay bump, so the cap figure still looks the same.
