OT: Introduce Yo Self

Post#1 » by and1GS » Sun Feb 10, 2013 5:00 am

So, I'm new to this forum and want to get to know all you awesome Niners fans. So when did you start being a fan? And what other boards are you all up in? Any other SF residents here?

I've been a Niners fan since I understood what sports were, but god, that Nolan stretch made me HATE football. Reminded me of when MJ was with the Bulls and I hated the NBA, I just always knew the outcome of the games that mattered to me...and it was often a pathetic loss for the Niners. Doesn't help that every year Alex was jerked around by idiots like Mike Martz and Singletary.

The turning point for me getting into the Niners again is still a vivid memory for me. I think it was his rookie season, but on a breakaway catch some WR was streaking down the sideline. As Niners fans we had just grown to accept that we sucked too much to ever stop the WR, and I was full expecting another embarrassing touchdown. But then came Patrick Willis, sprinting 50 damn yards and OUT-RUNNING WRs, CBs and safeties knowing full well that best case scenario he stops the WR short and they score in a couple plays. But he didn't accept that mentality, caught the dude and I immediately said 'this guy's special, and he's going to change the team.'

Ever since then patrick has led by example and we've been a different team. Sometimes it takes one phenomenal person/mentality to get you going in the right direction, but that's when I started caring again.

So what about y'all? Any favorite Niner moments?

Great thread idea. I'm an Aussie and growing up, basically from the time I could walk, I was a massive NBA and Chicago Bulls fan. I grew up playing basketball for years and though I admired the other American sports, I never had any way to play them. At around 20 or 21, I learned ice hockey at our local rink, but they closed the rink and there is only one other rink left in the state. I then found out late last year that there was an American football team being put together in our city which will play in the state league starting this year. I had always liked the game and had kind of supported a handful of teams from time to time, but the game was still pretty foreign to me. However, I went along and have learned so much and now I couldn't imagine NOT playing football. I figured it was time to pick a single team to support permanently, and considering that the first football thing I ever owned was a 49ers beanie when I was a little kid, I decided to make the Niners my team. Add to that the fact that I love San Francisco and really really want to live there, and it was a no-brainer for me.

Been a 9er fan since the '95 super bowl, when I was 12 years old. Basketball was my first love, so prior to that I liked them during the Montana era, but wasn't much into football at the time. In 1994, I started playing football and hence started getting more into and following football more. Frisco won that season't super bowl, and sice I always kind of liked Montana they were a natural fit to become my team.

I live in Indianapolis, IN and my allegiance to sports teams have nothing to do with geography. San Francisco 49ers are my NFL team, Detroit Pistons are my NBA team, Boston Red Sox are my MLB team, Conecticut Huskies are my college basketball team, and Purdue Boilermakers are my college football team. I personally couldn't care less about hockey, never could get into it. The Pistons' board is where I spend most of my time on realgm, as this is primarily a basketball site. I dabble on this board and the Red Sox board, mostly just checking in and if there happens to be new posts I will read, but rarely post in either because both are basically dead.

I loved Steve Mariucci, although the team wasn't great at the time. My least favorite era was the Dennis Erickson era, yuck. I was ok with the Nolan era, pretty impartial because I didnt expect the team to be any good. Singletary was just overmatched and never should have got that job. I have never, ever been an Alex Smith fan or believer. But yeah Patrick Willis was the one saving grace that made this team interesting for those lean years. Willis is a straight up beast, and the best player a lot of people have never heard of. His running mate Bowman is rapidly achieveing the same status as well.

Agreed, great thread idea.

I'm from Sacramento (two hours from SF) and have been a fan since I've had a conscious thought. My dad grew up in San Mateo so he was a Niners fan, his dad was a Niners fan, most of my extended family are Niners fans. They used to have training camp at Sierra College in Rocklin (I ended up going there for four years, which isn't good because it's a junior college) which is basically a suburb of Sacramento. I remember going out to see Jerry Rice and although I'm sure other great Niners were there, Rice is the only vivid memory I have from watching.

The local high school also had a charity event where the coaches and high school players played against the Niners in a basketball game. I got Garcia's, Owens', Hearst's, and some other autographs that game. TO was incredibly entertaining and actually really good (I think the Kings invited him to play on their summer league team some years ago, but that might have been a myth/joke). Say what you want about the guy, but he knew how to put on a show. I remember the ref called him for traveling or something so TO pulled the refs shorts down.
EDIT: Here's a link talking about TO and Kings: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/s ... 14&srvc=sz

Those years with Nolan and Singletary were tough. I even stopped following them for a couple seasons. I remember when JT O'Sullivan started week one and had like 300 yards passing, and I was extra excited because he was a UC Davis alum and a kind of protege of my friend's dad. I truly thought we had finally found a diamond in the rough and we were finally going to right the ship. Welp, we all know how that turned out.

Being a fan of the Kings, Giants, and Niners when they all sucked gave me a huge appreciation for having a great team. This Niners squad will go down as one of my favorite teams of all time. There is so much personality, heart, and talent on this team and they're led by the coolest coach in the NFL. Harbaugh has created such a positive, enthusiastic culture for this team and it's so great to watch. I love this team.

Very cool man, I'll be sure to tap when I have questions on the finer points of the game. Like blocking...I don't understand how it works. I see people do it, but I have no idea how I would replicate it without holding. Just never played the game.

The Erickson era was rough, I feel you there. Have some buddies that work/worked for the Niners and one said Erickson would have an intern bring him some alcoholic concoction after every game (like a harder long island iced tea). Dude just wasn't meant for the NFL, couldn't relate to players.

Lord. The JTO show made me hate the sport, I stopped watching for a couple years in college because it was so pathetic. Even watching this conjures up awful memories.

I remember in his last game he had 2 picks and 4 fumbles. How the hell does that even happen!?

Another quick segue about our awful recent history - every time we had a huge play, every time we converted on third down, and every time it looked like we just might be making a breakthrough what would happen?

I'm just going to paste what I said on another board when somebody asked me how I ended up supporting the teams in my sig.

I was born in London and when I moved to the States(FL) in 94 I was 8 years old. The Magic were always on tv b/c of local broadcasting so I got hooked to that team pretty quickly.

Pretty much the same goes with the Niners and Yanks. They were always on tv, b/c they were a good team. Naturally, I didn't know that b/c I was 8-10 years old. I actually almost became a Cubs fan b/c I remember watching a lot of their games on WGN. Since then, I have been a loyal fan to all three teams. Also, I don't chase players to other teams. I'm actually not a big fan of people who cheer for players over teams( ie kobe, lebron, melo,**** dwight, etc.). I'm waiting to see who the real Laker fans are once Kobe retires.

It's really that simple. I have followed all 3 teams through thick and thin. Cheering for the Yankees has obviously been the easiest during last 15 years or so, but I enjoy all my teams even during the rebuilding years. Going through it right now(again) with the Magic.

Some of my favorite 49er moments:

The comeback against the Giants in 2002.

My least favorite moment was last week, but let's not talk about that. I pretty much acted like this, but with more crying and less screaming.

I spend a lot of time on Real GM Magic. I do post over at another 49ers forum, but they don't support tapatalk which kind of sucks.

Hopefully this board grows!

Nah man, always felt like an American who was born in the wrong country, even from a year or two old, but never had the chance to go there. I'm saving for a trip there as kind of a 30th birthday present to myself in a couple of years (I'm 28 now). Planning to fly into LA, spend some time there and in SF, then rent an RV and drive it across the country and end up in NYC and Washington DC. Should take 3 or 4 weeks. Keen for a traveling mate or tour guide in SF if you're interested?

Cool idea for a thread.

Born and raised in Palo Alto (a SF suburb for those of you not from the area) so I've been a Niners/Warriors/Giants fan since I was old enough to comprehend what was going on. Dad is from DC so the Redskins are my second team. Was juuuuuuuust too young to really appreciate the end of the Steve Young era but somehow hung on through the dead zone of Erickson/Nolan/Singletary to remain a fan. Went to college in upstate NY and now living in Boston.

No way, you're from Palo Alto? Which part? I grew up near Stanford.

Nice, so you're very familiar with one of my favorite places in the world, Oasis, and one of my least favorite places in the Bay Area, Rudy's.

Yeah Oasis is a blast, haven't been there in years though.

Never actually been to Rudy's, but I've driven past it a million times. Doesn't look like I'll go now haha.

Since you guys are from SF, you heard of Julian's or Jillian's? That's where I watched the Superbowl and it was dope. Honestly, I couldn't have picked a better place to lose (or win). You knew the whole city felt your pain...it was like a massive support group.

It's the dive to end all dives.

Never heard of that place Nic, but it says it's in SOMA. I really tend to like most SF bars because there are so many people at each of them, or at least so many people under 40 (can't say the same for San Jose...).

Yes Ive been to Jillians, I used to live in SOMA and would go there quite often.

I watched the warriors '07 playoff run there and it was great. BIG place.

Anyways, Im a long time niner fan dating back to 94 when I moved out here to the bay area. But always watched the montana teams. My dad raised me as a giants fan as he was one but couldnt help rooting for the red and gold. I have a place in my heart for the giants and go see them play whenever the giants come out to the stick. But make no mistake the niners are my team.

I do hope this board builds up. I am a draft junkie and love to engage in draft talk.

Cheers.

I'm pretty late to this thread, but I've been avoiding literally everything football since the loss was pretty devastating.

I'm from Sacramento and a third generation 49ers fan. It's really hard to describe how much the 49ers mean to the men of my family. I don't have a lot in common with my father, and the same was true for my father and his father, but the one thing we all have in common is a fanatical passion for the 49ers. The Niners are the glue that keeps us together I guess you can say. My step-dad is also a fanatical fan and so was his dad, so I'm third generation in that respect as well. I enjoy a much better relationship with my step-dad, and the Niners play a big role in that too.

Anyway I'm also a Kings and a Giants fan. I keeps it strictly local. Hella.
