Could explain why they went light along the OL. Maybe the plan is for him to take Dorsey's spot.

An extension for Boone (that's how I'm reading this, not as just a new two-year contract?) could spell the end for Iupati. Looney showed development and played well as a whole in the preseason. M. Martin and Thomas could both hold down a guard spot. Can't see us paying for both Iupati and Boone. Also makes sense given the recent talks with Crabtree.

Gotta say, I love Iupati's ability, but he really turned me off with his comments after the SD game. I question his focus and desire.

Perhaps I should have read to the end of the article. Looks like it is just a rip-up, re-do sort of thing. He'll be a FA in 2016, which is the same as under his existing contract. Interesting....

http://www.sacbee.com/2014/08/31/666860 ... eport.html

According to Pro Football Talk, Boone's salary increases from $3.7 million over two years to $6 million over two. He'll be free agent in 2016. All the fines from his holdout will be waived.

Don't love that. Giving him more money with no extra time on the deal? Guess the team is serious about making a SB push this year.

Iupati was a goner no matter what as long as he was asking for top OG money. Loading up on OG talent was basically a sign the team doesn't expect to retain Iupati.

My main beef with Iupati is he needs to pass protect better if he expect top OG money. After 4 years he still has way too many mistakes in pass pro and there really isn't any excuse for it.

Wow, all it took it an extra $1M per year to get him back? Talk about being cheap...

Boone decides to come back after the offseason is over.. I would sit him out the 1st game to prove a point

I am just glad he is back. Small bit of Good news on an otherwise bad news day

Hmm....I dont really feel great about giving him extra money.

The 9ers had all the power. Looney has been playing well and Boone had two years left on his deal. He didn't seem to have much leverage. Hell, he was probably getting desperate wondering if he was going to lose his starting job. We shouldn't have caved at all.

I think the 49ers just chose Boone over Iupati, IMO, most likely due to his versatility.

Do the niners sit him week 1? Is he in shape?

I agree but we shouldn't have caved. No way he misses game checks, I don't mind the FO giving him more money but he should have gotten more years too IMO. And we can't franchise him when he becomes a FA.

I worry about if he is in football shape. But we will find out when he practices.

I would hardly say we caved. Based on everything I've read about it, he gets $0.00 in new money. They waved the fines and converted incentives to bonus money.

They also added an incentive that pays him 8M if he is All Pro this year and next.

This says he's set to make 6 million over the next 2 years instead of 3.9 million. So Baalke caved. TERRIBLE move. I would've rather they traded him than just reward him for his temper tantrum.

My understanding is the extra 2.1M was in his contract as incentives. It was converted to base salary.

If that's the case, then I completely take back my last post. I'll take your word for it, and CBS should've included that in the article.

It was my prediction that Boone wouldn't be dumb enough to throw away game checks and that he'd be back once his temper tantrum was over (before the Dallas game). Maybe those were easy incentives to achieve & it's a net zero gain?

If what you say is true then I feel a lot better about his extension. But my initial reaction was the same as Sick's noway he misses game checks so why give him more money and don't add any years to his contract.
