If he keeps playing the way he has been, does he hold on to the starting CB job when Brock gets back? I still like him more as the nickel back. At this point, he should be ahead of Ward for that spot. Hope the Niners re-sign him to a little longer contract this time after the season.

He'll definitely hold onto the starting job if he keeps this up. He's been all over the place making plays. Ward has really been exposed to a lot of mismatches because we don't have a lot of bodies back there. When Brock gets back that should hopefully give Ward some relief and allow him to settle down into a more defined role. I saw in this last game that they put Matthews into the slot to get a mismatch and exploited it. It wasn't like Ward was getting beaten like crazy though in this one, so maybe things are starting to slow down for him. Brock should give them a lot more flexibility to avoid those size mismatches.
Culliver made some plays in this last one but has been up and down. I wonder if Cox will take his spot on 1st and 2nd downs. Culliver is the Kap of CB's - he'll look absolutely great at times blowing dudes up and making plays and completely clueless at others like when a receiver faked him in circles - from the ground.

From what I read, Ward had a good showing against Philly. Foles completed only 3 passes against him for 17 yards. As for Cully, I agree completely. His problem doesent seem to be covering, but rather its locating the ball when its in the air. At times, he mistimes his jump and gets beat that way.

It would be awful for Cox to lose his starting spot after holding on to it successfully IMO...
If anything, it should give Brock time to recover more appropriately but even after that, I say demote Cully. Cully made some good breakups towards the end of the philly game but he gives way too much n too often. If that's by design, F Fangio... Not to mention the guy doesn't tackle, there was near replica of the SB sequence where the guy made the catch n fell n Cully waited for him to get up and dance around him.... smh

You're talking about Jacoby Jones and that catch Cal. Also, had Foles been accurate on that throw in the 2nd half as well as Stanton last week, Cullyinthehouse would have been beat for TD's in two consecutive weeks. I have been on record stating my dislike for the corner and I will continue to do so - I do not think he is a starting corner in this league. I would have Brock (if he's healthy) and Cox start and have Cullyinthehouse and

Ward fight for the nickle.

No question. Cox's play is definitely starter material this season and Brock is > Cully IMO and hopefully the coaches see that...
Who we trust in the slot? Cully or Ward.... dear god...lol

Cully's too cool to be the nickel so it's Ward. Maybe he changes his mind real quick when he's warming the bench.

I would think Cox would at least bump Ward from the nickel spot.
Ward just isn't a polished enough product to be on the field yet and Cox has plenty of experience in that role.
At least with Cox's play it allows Brock ample time to get healthy and no need to rush him back onto the field.

Reading Matt Maiocco's chat today, it sounds like Cox and Cully will remain starters. When Brock returns, he will come in on the nickel package and play outside and Cox will shift to the slot. The rule is the injured player doesn't get his job back unless his replacement is playing poorly, OR unless the injured returning player is a star.

I like having the problem of deciding which corner to play due to others playing great. Culliver is getting better and better. A year out of the game is a lot to come back from. Ward is getting better and better each game as well. Cook and Johnson looked good when they were in too. I have been thinking that the 9ers might have to go for that stud top 10 CB.
However, the two spots I see the most need for are a true #1 WR or DL. Crabtree and and Boldin might be gone after this season and then we will be stuck with Patton, Johnson, and Ellington. They are all good solid #2s/#3s, but not a number 1 WR.
The other spot I can see dire need for is a dominate DE/DT. Smith and McDonald are both getting old. Tank and Dial on the outside have not shown anything as they don't get on the field at all. They might be great, I just don't know. I would love someone in a Bryant Young/Justin Smith mold. Someone who can crush that pocket on any play and must be double teamed to run at or to pass protect.

I agree with you in part about getting a true #1 WR. As for Boldin, he is signed for next year as well and I doubt he goes anywhere before his contract runs out. He is playing very well. As for the DL, I really believe that Dial has a future on this team, he has shown more than enough in preseason. He could very well take over for Justin next year or McDonald too. Tank will be fine as well, too much talent. This is essentially his rookie season. He just has to master the system.

I don't think it's even a question. I would like to see Cox play opposite of Brock upon his return. Rotate CullyInDaHouse, Ward, and Johnson at nickel/dime. Cox has proven to be around the ball, shown IMO FAARRRR better overall coverage ability and ball skills, and has a feel for the defense that I think surpasses Culliver's talents and abilities.
Semi-side note: I don't know if it was his SB comments, but Cully doesn't strike me as someone who is smart. In fact, he's about as sharp as a marble, both when he speaks as well as his football IQ.

I would love to trade up for the DE from USC, Williams I believe. I think he has legit monster talent and can be Justin Smith v2.0 with some serious athleticism.
At WR, I am happy with where we are at. We have Stevie signed through the next two years, we have Boldin for another season, we have Patton and Ellington that need touches, and three TE that have shown the ability to catch the ball. I think our WR corps is deep with or without Crabs.
We def need to get more CB help. I put our DL as a higher priority with a serious need for a blue chipper, but if DL is 1, then CB is 1a.

Plus they are trying to extend Crab

The WR corps are deep by profile names but they are proving to be quite redundant and neither really seperates themselves from clear distinction.
One is rougher than the others but the end result, possession WRs across the board. We need a dynamic, whether its size or true speed.

The way Perish Cox has been playing, he should be starting alongside Tramaine Brock when he comes back from injury
