Thoughts on the Chiefs game

Lets have it guys! My thoughts are: Brandon LLoyd impressed today with the deep game, great catch on his second grab. Gore was absolutely a monster - good things happen when you feed him the ball. The OL continues to suck in pass protection, Boone was beaten like a drum by Dontari Poe in the 3rd quarter on one of Kap's sacks. Red zone offense continues to be a problem (too many FGs), and 3rd and short continues to be our achilles heel. And lack of pass rush again resurfaced today, ZERO sacks. Aldon cant come back soon enough.

PS: Clock mismanagement again. - 3rd and goal from the 15 and we throw it in the endzone to Boldin, it goes incomplete and clock stops at 2:17. Since we are kicking a FG anyway, why not run Gore again and take the clock down to the 2 min warning? Then kick the FG and leave the Chiefs 1:55 instead of 2:12. That kind of crap will cost us against better QBs.

I don't mind throwing to Boldin at the end. Getting a TD is game over and I want this team to try and score 6 instead of settling for FG attempts.

Agreed on wanting team to go for 6. We have to be aggressive on offense.

Defense- I'm really liking what I'm seeing from Lynch. And Willis made lots of good plays today.

Brandon Lloyd make a couple great catches, but he's not a 4.3 guy, so he's not a deep threat. We need Ellington instead. . .

The run game in general was great, the left side of the line was dominant run blocking, and save a little stretch in the late 3rd/early 4th we were quite good up the middle.

I thought the pass pro was quite solid. Yeah, Boone got abused once by Poe, and Poe beat Kilgore a few times, but Poe is a STUD. We can't expect to eliminate him from the game. I thought Martin played well against Houston overall, and Staley was very good against Hali. All 3 of those guys (Poe, Hali and Houston) are studs. They will make plays.

I thought Lynch was great again, and the pass rush, though bad early, did improve. The biggest issue was not covering the middle of the field early.

I disagree about the clock management as well. It was phenomenal in the first half (took 3 TO to the locker room, none wasted), and I had no problem with the decision to throw on 3rd down at the end. Had Smith not thrown the interception, the throw would have bought KC one more play on their final possession. If we connect on that pass (and Boldin was open, Kap missed him), we're up by 9 and the game is over. Missing it gets KC one more play to march the length of the field. I have no problem with that decision. The 2nd down call was one I disagreed with. With Kap at QB the naked boot is never going to be there. Hali did a good job staying home, an Kap did a great job staying in bounds. If they weren't going to give it to Gore there, it should have been PA with Kap having an option ot throw as he rolled left.

Dawson had a great game, and I'm more impressed with Carrier as a receiving option each week.

It was the correct move because the reward far outweighed the risk.

KC had already burned all of it's TO and if we get the TD we win the game barring a series of miraculous events and if we don't you're giving KC basically one extra play.

As far as the game thoughts go:

-Aside from a small stretch to begin the 2nd half I thought pass pro was excellent and as a result I thought Kaepernick was much better with his decision making.

-Run blocking was excellent as well and both Gore and Hyde were running hard and determined.

-Pretty clean game penalty wise as well and a great relief considering the flag happy crews the first few weeks of the season

-In general I still feel our pass plays take too long to develop and we just don't have enough easy quick hitting passes.

-Defensively we bounced back strong after a shaky 1st half but.......

-........ I can't stand the way we let guys catch balls in front of the DB for 1st downs. If it's 3rd and 5 why aren't the DBs playing more aggressively to stay in front of guys instead of allowing them to just stop and turn around for easy catches and 1st downs.

-Lynch continues to show why he was a guy with 1st round potential early in his college career. If he continues to grow him and Aldon could be a pretty fierce tandem.

-I thought overall the defense did a good job of keeping Charles in check and the demise of our run defense is vastly overrated.

-Overall the team seemed to respond the Harbaugh hoopla and it looked like everyone was playing hard out there.

-Tough win but a good win and these are the wins we need to grind out.

Remember you dont need to be a 4.3 WR to be a deep threat.

Kilgore looked good run blocking. If he keeps improving with more game time what do they do with Marcus Martin? I would have said replace iupati but he has been great last two games.

Didn't Aaron Lynch bat down yet another pass today? I think it was he.

The offense did what it was supposed to do today: push people around in the running game.

26 pas attempts for Kaepernick: that's about what I want to see.

Stick to the plan and the Niners will beat teams like this. :)

How's the OL lookin'? I didn't see the whole game. Seemed like they dominated in the run game. Saw Boone get shoved aside for a sack. Can't wait to see Anthony Davis back.

Didn't Looney come in for one play & give up a sack too?

I dont think so. I think Iupati was responsible for that one.

You may be right. I can't find the play on the highlights..

Anoine Bethea has been a pleasant surprise this season despite the missed tackle on the Black Mamba for a TD.

Another thing I was pleased with today was Kap hit 8 different receivers. Does anyone (pozz) know if that's the most he's ever hit in one game?

Gore passed Ottis Anderson for 26th place on the all-time rushing yardage list today. Here's what he needs to pass the next guys on the list.

26. Frank Gore - 10,291
25. Eddie George - 10,441 - needs 150 to pass
24. Tiki Barber - 10,449 - needs 158 to pass
23. Thomas Jones - 10,591 - needs 300 to pass
22. Jamal Lewis - 10,607 - needs 316 to pass
21. Ricky Watters - 10,643 - needs 352 to pass
20. Steven Jackson - 10,882 - Still active
19. Warrick Dunn - 10,967 - needs 676 to pass
18. O.J. Simpson - 11,236 - needs 945 to pass

Gore has averaged 75.4 rushing yards per game in his career. If he averages that the rest of the season (bit of a stretch) that will give him another 836 yards and he'll end the regular season behind O.J. Simpson for 18th or 19th all time depending on what Steven Jackson still does.

Even if he averages only 50 yards per game for the rest of the season he will end the regular season 20th on the all-time list.

Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, oddly enough, are 25th and 26th respectively on the all-time receiving list for yards right now.

If Boldin averages 66 yards/game for the rest of this season (career average is 72.3) he will end the season with 660 more yards (and 963 for the season). He would end his season with 12,307 yards which would move him from 25th right now to possibly 19th place depending on how Larry Fitzgerald finishes his year.

Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, and Steve Smith are the only current NFL players ahead of him on the list.

If he finishes 19th he will have passed the following players this season alone:

Keenan McCardell
Rod Smith
Muhsin Muhammad
Don Maynard
Michael Irvin
Derrick Mason
Hines Ward
Charlie Joyner
Jimmy Smith

Charles rushing by quarter:

1st - 6 for 34 yards rushing (Charles and Davis were 8 for 40 in the quarter)

2nd - 4 for 6 yards rushing (No Knile Davis)

At the half - 10 for 40 (Charles and Davis combined for 12 for 46) - Note: 4 yards for Charles on his final attempt was basically conceded by the 49ers defense right before halftime.

3rd - 3 for 31 yards (long of 26). (No Knile Davis)

4th - 1 for 0 yards. (No Knile Davis)

2nd half - 4 for 31 yards. (No Knile Davis)

I am almost positive it was Iupati/Boone's fault for that sack on the left side when Staley went out.. I think Iupati blocked him initially then got around Boone trying to help.

Thoughts?

Lynch needs to be on the field more often...

As expected, it was a grind kind of game...

Kap out performed Smith... you can make an argument as to why or why not, but Kap was pressured far more and came out with the win and better stats and most importantly no TO's...

And lastly, I usually have to watch the game on DVR after work. Occasionally I peek in on this forums game day thread. Its amazing the doom and gloom over reaction negativity that goes on in that thread.. its almost a race to the keyboard when something doesn't go right in the game... just chill out people, its a long game and a long season! Watching the game afterwards and remembering some of the comments from that thread just makes me shake my head sometimes...

Good win considering what this team is missing at this point...

That's why I don't participate in it anymore.
