PFF Grades Week 5

People have been extremely hard on
Iupati thus far (I think they can't get over his awful game against Dallas), but PFF grades him as the 2nd-best starter thus far. Why hasn't
Boone gotten half the criticism
Iupati has? Maybe the Niners need to keep
Iupati next year & let
Thomas take
Boone's job instead (or just trade
Boone?).
Brooks' has been disappointing this year. I don't think there's any way
Brooks should be back next year at his salary.
And then there's good ol'
#7. I'll let my former posts about him stand & leave it at that.

Great info thanks for the post. Boone got beat real bad on that sack, but this puts the overall game in perspective. Iupati's a great player who happened to struggle out of the gate from a carryover injury. He's going to be tearing it up as usual as the season goes on, and will be better the more we run. Crabtree will also turn the jets on after he gets over this foot thing. Not worried about either of those guys. Boone being worse than Martin in that game is a little bit of a shock. Kap having a lower rating than both of them is pretty alarming because I didn't think he had a bad game at all.

Has he been our 2nd best starter overall for the season or just this game?

I'm surprised Staley rated out that high. I didn't notice him and thats usually a good thing for an olineman. 6.8 is a really high score though.

Just that game. I erroneously thought that was through week 5 at first glance.
Iupati played great against the Chiefs, Bears and I think Eagles (not sure about Eagles). He was terrible against Dallas, and I don't remember how well he played against the Cards.
Either way, I want the guy back. Badly. He's probably the 5th-best healthy player on the team right now behind
Aldon,
JSmith,
Staley, &
Willis (and maybe
Gore &
Reid). Niners went cheap on the secondary; they can afford to go big on the OL. He's maybe the best run-blocking lineman in football, and if the Niners run the ball well they win.

The beef with Iupati is his pass blocking, and though it's cut off in the screen cap, you can see that his pass blocking grade is -1.something. He had a big day run blocking, but most on the team did. His pass blocking, again, was sub-standard.

This is true, but I'll take it. Even though his pass blocking isn't great, overall he's still a great guard. Guards aren't left tackles; the QB is going to see the pressure coming from interior rushers; and one of
Kaepernick's few bright spots is that he's one of the most mobile QBs in the NFL. And if the running game is dominating, the DL isn't going to be playing the pass so heavily. Plus,
Kaepernick only looks at one option in the passing game anyway before he takes off running.
Plus he's playing next to a pro bowl left tackle, and the Niners finally have a center who doesn't COMPLETELY suck at pass blocking (good riddance
Goodwin). Actually, they have two of 'em when
Martin comes back, and I think
Martin will quickly be one of the best centers in the NFL if he gets his chance to start. If not, he can play guard.
And
Iupati has been great at pass blocking in the past; he can get back to that level. In fact, he was at that level in the postseason before he broke his leg. I think
Iupati will keep getting better as the year goes on during a time when players usually shed a bit of weight.
Every time the Niners think they're a passing team they crumble. They need to think 90's Cowboys not 90's 49ers.

Does anyone have the PFF grades for the whole season to date?

Very surprised by some ratings. I didnt realize Iupati is doing as well as he is. (best lineman in a sense there sickness)
Lynch has been great, and Brooks has really sucked. Brooks is somewhat surprising. Thought maybe a little below avg.

This was Iupati's overall grade prior to the Chiefs game from PFF:
Mike Iupati – has posted a healthy +6.8 run grade (second-place among guards) but a less than stout -3.9 in pass protection (65th place).
The biggest gripe with Iupati is his pass protection and if you want to be called an elite OG and want top OG money you've gotta at least be decent in pass protection.
The thing is though is he shouldn't be this bad in pass protection. He has the physical skills to be great at it but he just gets sloppy with his technique and becomes Lungepati instead of keeping his feet moving and staying in front of guys.
With that said Boone has been way worse in pass pro. Right now I'll chalk Boone's struggles from him holding out but if he doesn't improve I'd seriously start considering putting Looney in there. We'd lose a bit in the running game but we'd gain in the passing game because it's just bad news to have two guards crappy in pass protection.

Boone's pissing me off. The guy had one very good season, but was only okay last year, held out this year, got more money, and has been the weak link. He'd better get his $#it together quickly.
The good news is that Iupati and Boone should continue to improve - at least in pass blocking. And Davis will hopefully be back in the near future. Once he returns, our ground game has the potential to be downright nasty.

How does Anthony Davis have a rating? I thought he hasn't played a single snap this season. Or did he just get hurt week 1?

He played in the Philly game, but was injured during the game when Kap fell into the back of his leg.

Gotta say, I don't have tremendous faith in any rating system that gives Bruce Miller a negative grade for that last game....

Like was mentioned the beef with Lou is his piss poor pass blocking. It has been awful for two seasons now. I'm hoping Thomas can take over next season and we use money elsewhere.
Boone has been getting plenty of flack in here. We are all fed up with him for holding out and missing a ton of time because it has resulted in poor play from him.

Cowboy, Lynch and Ian Williams with the only real positive pass rush grades. I have noticed Ian collapsing the pocket a lot and our run D has been very good. I'm not too concerned about Dorsey coming back. We just need Aldon and our D should become phenomenal. Bow will probably not be the same until next season.

I'm not too concerned about it either... yet. However, lack of depth will come back to bite the team in the ass like it did in 2012 if someone goes down. If
Dorsey comes back towards the end of the season, that will be a really nice bounus because the last month of the regular season needs to be one where the backups get plenty of reps because the starters need the rest.
