No surprise as I've always felt the 9ers could bring him back if he came on the cheap. His days of being a feature back are done but I can still see him being effective as a guy that gets around 10 carries a game.

I can see him coming back if another team doesn't best our offer.

I've had a complicated fan relationship with Gore. He went to one of my two favorite college football schools, got drafted by my favorite NFL team, wasn't a player I had a ton of faith in producing (health, pass blocking, and maturity concerns). He then became one of my favorite players to watch from a technical aspect and he's one of the first players I have young kids watch when it comes to teaching footwork, balance, body lean, and I've passed around quotes from coaches on his work ethic over the years.

With that said, I have not seen a bigger Carlos Hyde fan than myself and I wonder how much Gore is going to eat into the cap next year. I have a whole lot of problems with this roster and I have little concern about giving Hyde the offense and putting a ton on his back. There are things about Gore that Hyde can't do right now and probably will never be able to do and provide but I think there's things Hyde offers that Gore can't give anymore either.

I'd like to see what Gore would be willing to settle for first but as hard as it is to see one of the best offensive players this team has had in a long time go, and a man that is just a straight up football player, which is rare these days, I could see myself being OK with giving the offense to Hyde, hoping Kendall Hunter isn't completely damaged and willing to come back, and then adding two more bodies in the offseason. I'm really upset they lost Glenn Winston this offseason because I had faith that man has a future playing.

You're probably going to upset some of the guys on the team if you don't let him go in the best manner so that would be a concern but given history, I tend to believe one could somehow handle that issue and eventually get through it OK. Of course that's me speaking as a completely outsider there.

If Gore is going to eat up as much as I may think he could and I were in charge with the exact same concerns as I have now, and if I were actually general manager it's possible there'd be more concerns that I'd know about, I'd probably let him depart given his expected price and rely on my ability to find available running backs, which is one of my favorite spots to watch and something I feel like I have the ability to do at this point in my life.

The Niners have not been known to overpay players. It is mutual, both sides want to continue, so I think that part of it is settled...the playing time may be more tricky, as well as who the Niners hire as coach. No doubt it will be a coach who will favor running more than passing, and he should. The OL is better built for run blocking and mauling. So given that, I think Gore returns on a 2 year deal probably.
