Alex Flanagan:

I'm hearing this will be 49ers DT Justin Smith's last game. Retirement looming after 14 yrs. in the NFL

Others have thought the same.

I can only see Smith coming back if Fangio stays.

If Fangio stays I can see the Cowboy being convinced of giving it one more ride with a chance to end it on a better note.

I've had a sinking feeling that Cowboy would choose to retire if there is a serious coaching turnover on the defense and/or a "rebuilding project" instead of a "reloading weapons," but still, seeing the headlines regarding his impending retirement doesn't make it any easier.

Even if I could see into the future and knew for a fact that SF wouldn't win the Super Bowl next season I would *still* want Cowboy to play 1 final season for SF in 2015 (with Frankie G.... and Boldin).

They need to give Smith the BY treatment and carry him off the field regardless of what happens (win or loss; retirement or 1 more ride). Though I doubt anyone will have the forethought to think of it in the moment.

This is actually good news for the 49ers because they need to rebuild IMO.

He was one of my favourite Niners of all time though. Up there with BY.

Of My favorite Niners of All time Its Ronnie Lott, Rathman, BY Willis, Justin Smith, Gore and John Taylor not neccesarily in that order other than Lott

Really hope fangio can talk him into one more year. Def one of my favorite niners with gore.

Really hope gore, Boldin and smith get one more year. I know Boldin and smith are under contract but anything is possible with new coaching coming in.
