Day One of minicamp,

Reaser is a standout again and is climbing the depth chart. DeanDre White was also a standout and making a name for himself. Bell looked better in the passing game than McDonald. Aldon Smith got hurt, does not appear serious.

White's got a shot at making the roster if he keeps it up. Though he and Simpson might be battling for a single spot.

I'll read your links below. I heard Kaep was hot and cold. Hit some really nice passes on rollouts but misfired at times from the pocket. Also read he is headed back to Arizona to work with Giles when Minicamp is over.

Pinion might be a weapon for us next year.

Looked up White's combine stats. Appears he has roughly the same 40 speed as Simpson, so I imagine they are both speed guys? Their average is about 4.4.

If FO can sufficiently stomp out the trade rumors regarding Kaepernick, then this will be virtually a NO-PRESSURE year for everyone involved. I wonder how many teams are already sleeping on us that we can surprise during the year before teams catch on.

Today big story from minicamp was Vernon Davis. Many comments about how fast he looked. He caught two bombs from Kaepernick. Davis sounded like his old self. If he can regain his speed, that gives us two serious deep threats on the roster, not including others depending on who makes the team. This will help open up things underneath.

One person commented on Harold looking like Aldon Smith due to his speed on the go.

Some positive reviews on the rookie front: Tartt playing FS with the first team and picking Kap to end practice. Eli Harold apparently had at least two very nice rushes (likened to Aldon by Grant Cohn). And Blake Bell seems to be making a lot of nice receptions.

In terms of guys who weren't with us last year, Torrey Smith, Bush, and Hunter (with us, but not playing) continue to receive praise.

Two things that I really like hearing: simplifying the offense/getting the snap off faster, and all the speed that's out there. Last year we just couldn't stress defenses. Some of that was due to injuries (losing Hunter, James basically quitting, Davis not being right), but it also seemed philosophical. But it killed us. Teams could just constrict us since we couldn't threaten either vertically or horizontally. It seemed like upwards of 75% of our plays were either within 15 yards of the LOS or inside the hashes (and probably 50% were both). It will be nice to be able to actually threaten most of the field.

Got to say, I'm getting somewhat excited. I really think the offense could be markedly better this year. With Smith, a healthy Davis, and some speed at RB, we can do things we simply couldn't last year. A lot is riding on the OL, but a zone blocking scheme probably suits us more with guys like Iupati and Davis gone anyway. Still a longshot to make the playoffs, but I look forward to maybe surprising some people.

The receiving core is definately better this year and if Vernon Davis if the early reports of Vernon Davis being his old self, that would really make this WR corps dangerous. The big question for the offense is going to be the offensive line. If they play poorly, nothing else will matter.

Reggie Bush - RB - 49ers

Reggie Bush has been getting the first running back rep in each drill during OTAs.

Carlos Hyde missed some time last month with a minor leg issue and it's likely Bush is getting veteran respect. But it's a reminder that Hyde's carry count will be nibbled into by Bush, fourth-round rookie Mike Davis and a healthy Kendall Hunter. The coaches are not just handing Hyde 20 carries on a silver platter. Meanwhile, if the stripped-down Niners are trailing often this season, Bush is set up for significant usage as the no-doubt passing back.

DeAndrew White is again a standout at WR. Hope it carries forward.

Joe Fann also noted as standouts -

Tartt - Closing Speed
Mike Davis - Hands Out of the Backfield
DeAndrew White - Stud

I love that we are trying to focus on time management and going quick. I think Kap is best in a hurry up type offense where he doesn't have to think too much and can just use his natural ability to make plays and the right decision for the team.

I'm glad to see we're implementing a more up tempo offense.

One of the frustrating things for me watching the Harbaugh offense is while I understood they wanted a slow pace to burn clock I felt often times when they had a defense on their heels they would allow them to catch their breath and regroup by taking up the entire play clock.

It's like a boxer landing an uppercut and stunning his opponent and just standing there waiting for his opponents counter punch instead of following up with a barrage of punches.

That is because the three " coordinators " were figthing over which play to call. :)

What made it even worse was that it seemed like we were always more surprised by a big play than the D. I can remember so many 20+ yard plays where we had to burn a TO afterward because we couldn't get down the field, huddle up, and get the snap off. So frustrating for a plodding offense. We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot with the time management. That's one of the main reasons why I think the firing of Harbaugh was merited (as I've said before, not saying we SHOULD have done it, just that it's not as much of a head-scratcher as some in the national media have made it out to be) in terms of on-field performance.
