PASS RUSH ON BASE DOWNS

Post#1 » by 49er4life1979 » Mon Aug 3, 2015 12:45 am

From the looks of it, Quinton Dial will be lining up at Ray McDonald's old LDE spot, Ian Williams will be the NT, and Glenn Dorsey will be in Justin Smith's old spot RDE. That loosk like a great run defense package on base downs, but I am afraid the defense could get torched if the DL doesent provide any pass rush on base downs. Ray McDonald and Justin Smith were great run stoppers, but were also decepetively good pass rushers too. I think I would much rather have Tank start at one of the DE spots as he is capable of pressuring the QB and has the size and athleticism to be good in the running game. What do you guys think?

Fangio said last year Carradine was out of position on run plays, SO, I guess it depends on whether Carradine can eliminate those mistakes on base downs

You're also going to have Aldon and Brooks out there. Dial, Williams, and Dorsey aren't elite pass rushers by any means, but they also should be fairly fresh, playing only about 1/2 the snaps. I think we'll be okay. And if a team starts throwing a lot out of base downs, then you bring in a guy like Tank or Dockett a bit more.

Tank and Dockett are stronger pass rushers but that doesn't mean Dorsey and Dial can't apply a pass rush either.

And really all Dial and Dorsey just need to do is set the table for Aldon and Brooks and free those guys up to get sacks and a pass rush going.

So I don't see it being a huge issue but like Crim said they can always put Tank and/or Dockett in there if they need to amp up the pass rush. Just like Dial and Dorsey aren't incapable of a pass rush Tank and Dockett aren't completely unable to stop the run either.
