Really wanted him when he came out. Thought he had a pretty good chance at coming close to his ceiling in that defense. Has gotten pretty good marks as a run guy but never really broke out as a PR specialist, probably partially due to not having the maturity, discipline, whatever else, to come in at an appropriate weight. He blamed that on "personal issues" but it happened in two difference off seasons, so that's something that is a question mark if you're considering him.

I'd have interest in taking on that challenge if it were me if the background and interview stuff didn't scare me. I always liked Lemonier and was a big fan of Harold so it's still going to be interesting what happens with those guys. It feels like Lemonier is or very well could be on his way out depending on who they add this year and what he shows.

Josina Anderson:

Sources tell me that OT Russell Okung is close to finalizing a 5-year deal with the Denver #Broncos worth $10.6M per year.

A $10.6M/year average would put him at the 7th highest mark in the NFL. Hmm...

By comparison, Staley's average is 14th highest.

Ian Rapoport:

The belief is the #Broncos now try to trade LT Ryan Clady, with Okung agreeing to terms in Denver.

He has 2 years remaining on his contract.

They got rid of Peyton's $19 million cap hit. But I thought otherwise the Broncos were capped out.

If they go with butt fumble, they won't be going anywhere.

I would see if the Broncos would go for a lower round pick and Clady for Kaepernick.

Clady and Staley would make for great bookends and if Davis does come back you can kick him to G and suddenly the offensive line doesn't look all that bad with Staley, Beadle, Kilgore, Davis, and Clady.

I trade Kaep for Clady straight up. Hell I would even throw in a late pick. It's a no-brainer. We have no idea what is up with Bam Davis. He still hasn't done reinstatement paperwork and who knows what shape or how productive he will be. Maybe he can move to RG.
Get it done Baalke. Clady is one of my favorite players and he is coming off a torn ACL just the way Baalke likes it.

RB Lance Dunbar is re-signing with Cowboys for 1 season at $1.75 million, per @caplannfl.

Thank God.

Mike Garafolo:

The Russell Okung deal is actually structured as a one-year, $5m deal with a team option for the final four years at $12m per year.

Robert Griffin III - QB - Free Agent

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports the "prevailing opinion" at the NFL Owners Meetings is free agent Robert Griffin III will sign with the Browns.

Per Glazer, "most" people around the league expect RG3 to land in the NFL's Factory of Sadness. Assuming Griffin comes at reasonable cost -- he almost certainly will -- he makes sense as a flyer-type pickup for the annually rebuilding Browns. A la the NBA's 76ers, the Browns have little hope of competing in the near term and appear willing to take chances on players with theoretical talent so long as they come with minimal risk. Griffin is still only 26 years old, and by far the best theoretical talent remaining on the free agent quarterback market.

Nick Fairley - DL - Free Agent

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots are "out" on free agent DT Nick Fairley, and he's expected to sign with the Saints.

Fairley surprisingly drew very little interest on the open market despite showing well in a rotational role with the Rams last season. It didn't do much to rehab his value, however, as he's again settling in the second wave of free agency after inking a one-year pact with the Rams last March. Fairley should give the Saints' interior pass rush a nice jolt. They desperately need it.

49ers are a "draft and develop" team.

So we can just end this thread, not bother for future seasons either.

Oddly, I read in an article (covering the same statements by Baalke as above, perhaps?) over the weekend where Baalke said there were still opportunities to improve the team through draft and FA. The draft, absolutely. If we wanted to improve the team through FA, we're just a touch behind the eight ball. I strongly agree with taking a measured approach to FA, but the Niners seem to be taking that to an extreme given just how many needs we have.

It wouldn't surprise me if they have another dumpster fire of a season and then are more active in FA next year.

Just as they thought Tomsula was going to do well and then learned the hard way, they're probably going to realize that they can't depend solely on draftees working out, especially when you have all that cap space.

This year I'm actually fine with their approach to FA because even if they won't say the team is expecting another bad season as they transition to a new coaching staff and build the roster to suit Kelly's tastes.

Which is why this year I'm fine with their approach to FA because they are at least 2 great drafts away from being a real contender again. It's better to bring in guys when the window is starting creep open so you can maximize their prime years on the team.

That's why the Raiders were in on FA because they knew they had talent at key positions that is starting to blossom into their peaks and the window is starting to open for them so now is the time to strengthen the roster and go for the playoffs.
