Tank moving to OLB?

Shed the weight and play him where he should. Hand in the dirt rushing from the edge please.

No time for Carradine: Defensive tackle Tank Carradine didn’t play a snap Sunday and was the only member of the 46-man active roster who didn’t play.

Carradine, the No. 40 pick in 2013, has one sack this season and has played more than 19 snaps in two of nine games. He played just nine snaps, his second-lowest total of the season, in a 27-6 loss at St. Louis on Nov. 1.

Tomsula said the 49ers are asking Carradine to adopt a different role.

“That wasn’t a knock on Tank not playing,” Tomsula said. “It’s just kind of where we are coaching-wise now. You know, trying to switch gears a little bit with Tank and utilizing him to his strengths.”

Tomsula, the 49ers’ defensive line coach from 2007 through ’14, said he approached the defensive staff about tweaking Carradine’s role.

“That is an area that I got involved in, just in terms of Tank, because I coached him,” Tomsula said. “Excited about it.”

Tomsula is more confusing than the Riddler when he speaks. What he says comes off as circling around dialogue with no point made. I feel life is literally being wasted when he speaks because there's no progress or anything forward with his vague dialogue.

Anyways, need to try something more to get Tank involved. Maybe he's a bust as a 2nd rd(go figure there Baalke) but got to try something. Insert him strictly for pass rushing or move him to OLB for all I care...

He's almost 300 pounds.

Does he have the agility to drop back in coverage or set the edge on outside runs?

Not at at this current 295 lbs lol...I can see him dropping some weight and playing more DE in the passing downs, his position in college was a 4-3 DE.

Tried that with Andre Carter; didn't work out too well.

Tank is a situational DE IMO. I'd give him a contract extension and use him exactly like that. Kind of like Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila back in the day. He's done well rushing the passer, but he's not an every-down 5-tech guy.

So far I just don't see it with Tank. Most games I don't see him anywhere near the QB. He got some pressure against the Seahawks but a dlineman with two broken legs can get through that oline. He has been pretty bad. Maybe on the end he can generate some pressure but so far he is on par with Lemonier.

I totally agree. You would expect a lot more from a high 2nd round pick. But with the team at 3-6 and some of Baalke's picks under more scrutiny then ever, I don't blame them for trying anything they can to get Tank going.

So we used a high second round pick on a situational pass rusher who was red shirted his first year? Seems reasonable........

We desperately need outside pass rush, so I don't mind trying to move him to what amounts to a 4-3 DE on passing downs in our D. It's just frustrating that it's taken so long to get to that realization.

Our second round picks, generally, have been a disaster for years. It appears Hyde and Tartt may change that trend a bit, and you've got to consider Kap a success solely based on his first four years, but man it was bad for a while. Chilo Rachal, Taylor Mays, Lamike James, Carradine and McDonald. Ugh.

Hopefully he can get into the 260s in the off-season.

I wasn't aware that Tank put on weight and was trying to be a different player playing a different position. Might have been a dumb move on the coaches part. Hopefully losing the weight and playing on the end will make him a better pass rusher. This team sure could use it.

Think this is the primary reason we moved down a few slots before taking him. He wasn't the ideal fit for our system. He ideally fits with a 4-3 team. If he can get pressure on third down then we can use him in that role going forward as a hand in the dirt pass rushing DE like many have been calling for on this site for awhile now. Or trade him to a 4-3 team if there's interest.

It's taken awhile to pull the plug on him with added weight, but that's the nature of the beast. It takes awhile to develop D-line projects. He's shown this year that he just won't be able to hold up inside, allow him to focus on his natural strengths. If he can fill that 3rd down role, then he'll become a key rotation specialist, and would get a lot of playing time against pass heavy teams.
