I'm still holding out hope. If he were coming back he wouldn't want to announce it until the off-season, when he can negotiate a contract.

His contract extension runs through 2017

Willis has shot down the rumor. We'll see, but not holding my breath.

And yes, as Patterson pointed out, Willis is still under contract. And my understanding is that the contract tolls while he's "retired." I don't think he could come back in 2018 and be like, "Now I'm a free agent." I think he'd still have the three years remaining whenever he came back.

Contracts can be renegotiated. Right now he has a bit of leverage, and "staying out" helps him keep that.

Even if he came back, he'd be 31 in January. And he had already seen his best days probably 3 years ago.

He could still be effective, like Seau later in his career or Spikes the one year he was here.

But the team needs to bring in youth at the position.

I doubt his contract has anything to do with his coming back. He is dealing which a chronic toe condition that apparently wasn't even fixed with surgery

Davis isn't a surprise as it was always his intention to return in 2016 and he only "retired" this year to get his body right.

No way to tell with Willis as he mainly retired because of his toe and if it's not better than I don't see him considering a comeback.

MLBs typically have long shelf lives so if he comes back healthy he should be pretty effective.

Davis will return but will need to earn his job back. The team likes Trent Brown and Davis also needs to mend fences for walking away at the worst possible time, leaving the organization and his teammates hanging...As for Willis, he's already shot it down. It's not happening.
