I don't get this sentiment.

What new HC would want the former HC on his staff?

Even if there weren't suspicions about Tomsula undermining Harbaugh, it would just be weird to have your predecessor on your staff.

I'm sure Jed would like it, because it would save him some bucks. But that would make for an awkward workplace.

Am I the only here that wants Chip? I've never felt so alone.

John Middlekauff @JohnMiddlekauff
#49ers interest in Payton is clear but I'm told he will not come cheap - it would cost them a 1st rounder

I like Payton but a 1st rounder is no go. I'd rather nab Chip or Hue.

I wouldn't give a first or second for Payton. The Niners need a coach AND players. Reading Pozzs post makes Kellys more palpable as long as he doesnt have personel control. Be nice if they make a run at Gase again.

Definitely wouldn't give up a 1st rounder for Payton, wouldn't give up a 2nd rounder either.

I could live with Kelly. We would need a bad ass DC though. We are still stuck with Baalke calling the picks though. This is still a problem imo.

Matt Maiocco on Periscope
https://www.periscope.tv/w/aVnu1DI3M...1opLIwYvhA29iN

His thoughts so far:
- Geep Chryst, no chance he comes back
- Kap, with all the time he spent on sideline, 49ers have 3mill in credit, so suddenly Kap's salary for next year is not so huge. Kap could stay a 49er depending on next coach
- Gabbert. Starting QB is wide open, Gabbert no longer the most likely to be starter
- A lot depends on new head coach
- Jed York, probably won't apologize but will admit to some mistakes
- New coach will likely be hired quickly, within next two weeks
- First question Matt will ask Jed York tomorrow at press conference: "Do you regret not making it work with Jim Harbaugh?"

Two weeks?

They won't be able to interview candidates who coach for a playoff team which makes a deep run.

Guess they really wanted to get a jump on things, like the notion that they decided to move after Philly fired Kelly, because they wanted to get a jump on the coaching carousel.

That should kill any notion by people that Yorks are cheap. They are many things dont get me wrong - incompetent, meddling, insular, etc...But it doesnt seem like they mind paying money for coaches or in this case eating a contract with 3 years remaining.

I would not mind Payton. I just don't want to pay more than a 4th rd pick for him.

yea, I was thinking of NFL only when I wrote that up, didn't even think of outside the nfl but Shaw obviously would meet the rule.

I never thought Jed hiring Tomsula was about the money.

Patt I never meant you specifically, but as you know there is a segment of the 49ers fan population out there, as well as some members of the media that believe that. It just doesnt add up. Heck, I remember back in 2005 when John York fired both Dennis Erickson and GM Terry Donahue ( signed to a 4 year extension just prior to 2004 season), he ate both of their contracts, and that was a lot of dough to eat. So yea, the Yorks no doubt want to win as much as any other owner, the question is do they know how? They have run off successful coaches not once, but twice (Steve Mariucci 2003).
