Re: Chip Kelly new head coach
I can't say I love the hire but I would say I still like the hire.
My reasoning is Chip has the highest ceiling out of all the candidates out there and the lowest floor so you either going to hit a homerun with it or you're going to flame out hard quickly which means Baalke goes with him and the franchise can start fresh and anew.

Re: Chip Kelly new head coach
I expected this after Hue went to Cleveland. With Kaepernick his offense can be great. Just don't let Chip do the grocery shopping. Treadwell to be the first pick for the niners to make the offense great. Smith, Treadwell, and Smelter = passing attack of the 49ers with Rice, Owens, and JJ Stokes.

I tend to agree I don't see average coming it's going to be a home run or a fall on your face strike out. Hope for the best that he can fix Kaep and the offense...or if not get a number 1 draft pick and Baalke fired....

Well at the very least the offense won't be "cure for insomnia boring" anymore.

NFL network just said that Gamble was a huge supporter of bring in Kelly. That was even after Kelly got Gamble fired last season.

Actually now I'm on board. No GM Chip is a good Chip—let's hope.

Re: Chip Kelly new head coach
I'll be open-minded but again seems like a bad scheme fit for the kind of personnel Baalke pursues.
If you play fast instead of play ball control, power running game, the defense plays more snaps and wears down. Maybe you score more points but you give up more points.
Kelly at Oregon was good enough to beat up teams up to a certain level but against the elite, physical teams, they hit a ceiling. While the sets and plays they use is different from what the NFL was used to, it may be that NFL defenses have caught on to it now after 3 seasons. Scouts who've looked at the Eagles after awhile believe it's more of an execution system as opposed to a system where scheme variation or being "multiple" keeps defenses off balance.
That first year, Foles had a big year as he often got well-defined reads, players getting wide-open. Of course that was the question about Mariotta, that he was used to getting easy well-defined reads at Oregon instead of having to go through the progression.
If Kelly can produce those conditions, Kaep could of course be productive again. But there's a question of whether that system can produce those conditions against the top teams.
Also, is Hyde the right kind of RB for Kelly's offense? DeMarco Murray was ineffective because he couldn't take a handoff from shotgun and run to the outside, often being tackled for a big loss. He was more of a north-south runner, behind a power OL. When the Eagles were more productive, they had athletic OL like Jason Peters. It seems the 49ers OL was drafted more to be mashers, at the point of attack, though with Iuapati gone and maybe Davis not the player he used to be, that may no longer be the case.
Bottom line, I think Kelly can get the team to be playoff team again but not advance all the way. It all depends of course on how well the drafts and free agency goes in the next couple of years. You would hope that with the drafting position and cap room, the 49ers gain ground on the rest of the division, little by little, as the core players on those other teams age.

Well I am for one who was against this hire. Still am but not end of the world either... a la Tomsula hiring.
So i'll bite my tongue and see what happens. With assumed(on my part) limited power in player control, maybe we won't look like those eagles after all....
But I hope we keep or hold on to Droughn and Harris, I like what I saw from them for us.... Does this also bring back Bush?(remember that guy? lol)

I am not so worried about defense. Baalke does a good job of finding good defensive players.

i was happy about Tomsula and I will learn to be happy about Kelly too. I did not want him, but I will support him and trick myself into liking this pick till he proves me wrong.

Idk what to say, hooray we have a coach? or wtf we have Kelly?
its done with though. Not thrilled or excited but maybe after a few pressers and roster changes including staff, maybe i'll change my tone for better or worse...
but congrats to Chip... you better be worth it.

I think our biggest issue now is getting slimmer west coast style offensive linemen. His system uses more athletic linemen who use angles and must get down the field to block.

If I have misconceptions about the football side it's possible I'm not a fan of his offensive style. Not saying he's wrong or I know more. His offense when it's working as planned is fun to watch. If he gets the right defensive coordinator then I will be happier. I am a fan of the power run game and a defense that imposes it's will on the other team. same with the running backs like Riggins, Jim Brown, Gore, Walter Payton and Lynch that one cut and go hit people. I'm old fashioned that way. I think Chip is a high risk high reward coach. I can see him taking the Niners to the playoffs next year as easily as I can see them in number 1 draft pick contention. I don't have an issue with him strictly on the football side think he's solid on that. I have concerns with personality and communication style clashing and hurting the team in that manner.
RedneckNiner, here's my response from the other thread which got locked before I could respond.
Yeah, I think Kelly can be a very good coach in the right environment but he needs to go through a maturation process on the human relations part of his make up. The personality thing borders on an unknown for me but I'm more worried about the player evaluation process given Baalke's make up of his own. They're actually closer individuals stylistically than Shanahan would've been with Baalke but it's not the greatest fit from a schematic standpoint, though I'm not sure if there was a great fit out there for Baalke as far as style and schematics go.
One of the misconceptions about Chip is that he doesn't play power football or can't. He's got it in him. It's not as much of an emphasis as some people would like but as far as power football goes for me it's more so with him about when to use it than if he'll favor power principles.
I can't see this team going to the playoffs as of now under almost any realistic circumstance but I've been wrong before.
The team is going to have to go on the offensive from a damage control perspective as well as a misunderstanding perspective because there is SO much junk out there on Chip that is untrue or just plain false from the past. That part is going to be the most maddening part.
