Adam Schefter:

Former 49ers OT Anthony Davis, who abruptly retired last June, will apply for reinstatement and wants to play in 2016, per league sources.

Good news as Davis returning will allow them to focus on the interior of the line which has been mostly horrid the past two years.

And as long as Davis kept himself in shape he could be due for a really good year after he knocks the rust off as he should be completely fresh and healed up from any nagging injuries.

RT is now fixed. Draft a true LG and re-signing Boone will repair the line fully

Tough to rely on Davis too much after a year off. He doesn't seem like the sort to take the initiative to stay in great shape. Though maybe with Brown we're sound enough that we take a chance and don't address RT - at least until later in the draft.

Then again, if there is value at OT, we could consider kicking Davis to RG.

Boone sucks. No wanty.

Draft Taylor Decker. Put him at LG until Staley retires.

If Baalke had a clue, he would've used a throw-away pick on La'El Collins. :nonono:

This. You never know if he'll come in at 370 pounds or 250 pounds. And that doesn't even speak to whether he's been lifting or not.

Why wouldn't it be good news? Davis is bordering on great as an OT and young. He has stated many times that he's staying in shape for his return. He represents an immediate and substantial upgrade at the position. I don't see anything but good here.

Unless the reason he was great was because he was on 'roids, and if he cycled off of them, he won't be as good.

And tweeting that he's "keeping in shape" doesn't necessarily equal he's in football shape.

With Trenton Brown looking as good as he did as a rook, I'm not entirely convinced having Davis back is a good thing.

That's all speculation on your part, there's no evidence of any steroid use that I've seen.

Saying that he's staying in shape for a comeback highly implies that he's in football shape or close to it. I might also add that he will definitely get in shape during camp as the majority of players do.

Trent Brown isn't on Davis' level and until he shows he is, Davis is a major upgrade.

Even if Davis isn't in the best of shape right now he'll get back into shape especially in Chip's system.

But the larger point is that even if Davis struggles early on due to rust he does solidify the position for the future and the team can address other needs in FA and the draft.

Anthony Davis - T - 49ers

"Retired" RT Anthony Davis tweeted that he'll file for reinstatement "later this year."

"I'll be filing for reinstatement to the NFL later this year," Davis tweeted Friday. "Dealing with [GM] Trent [Baalke} is giving me a headache." Baalke has been in contact with Davis this offseason and has said the team will welcome him back for the final five years of his contract. It'll be a big boost to the offense after Erik Pears was forced to take over right tackle for the 49ers last year. Davis is still just 26 and should return to being one of the game's top right tackles.

My friend said he would wait for Kaepernick to be gone before he gets reinstated, but he hasn't returned my texts yet on why that is. He can't block for someone who won't stay in the pocket? Or is it something personal? I guess, healthwise, he'd need a QB that doesn't get him hurt, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to why he'd be holding out for Kaepernick's trade first.

Considering Re-Retiring: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000698062/article/report-ol-anthony-davis-pondering-retirement-again

He is the anti-Favre - staying in until the last minute of the off-season before leaving right before the season starts. In retiring at the beginning of the off-season. One similarity is that players have to convince him to play at the last minute. Maybe he thought he'd be traded or Kaepernick would be gone?

So is Davis just milking the team for as much as he can get on the injured list? Wouldn't put it past him.

Not looking good since he isn't back yet. Either he's damaged for real or he is milking it and wants to be put on IR. Not that it matters because I don't see him ever starting unless an injury takes place.
