You knew the off season was going to quietly

I'm wondering if he'll ever be the same type of player again.

What substance? I'd be more worried about steroids than weed.

Dude definitely smokes, I hung out with him quite a few times in his college days.

This is for substances like cocaine, marijuana, opiates, ecstasy, etc.

If it was for non-steroid type then I'm actually more optimistic about his return to form if he can clean his act up. Hopefully we don't have an Aldon part deuce in the making though. It's only going to get tougher now that he's on the radar.

If it's for weed there isn't much to be concerned about unless he keeps getting busted for it and just can't lay off of it.

Alcohol is the one that's concerning because it typically gets players in trouble off the field and that's when you get train wrecks like Aldon.

Would he really get a four game suspension for weed? Coke would be a major red flag. Not sure if they improved the testing, but thought cocaine moves quickly through your system so not easy to test for. Just saw the 30/30 Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden which was crazy. They navigated around most of the tests at that time and were complete messes.

Weed seems likely. Let's hope he can get it together. Aldon's issues were basically just alcohol, which isn't even banned, but he couldn't deal with it.

One downside of this is that it basically assures Brooks a roster spot. I was hoping we could finally move on from him.

Right when he's essentially in a contract year, meaning he's eligible for a new contract after this season.

Glad it's happening in a throw-away season instead of a contending season.

We should dump him anyway and give his roster spot to a young guy. We aren't competing for anything anyway. If we dumped Boldin why stop there.

I think he should (and will be) dumped as well.

It's clear everybody in the building is treating this as a rebuilding year so there is absolutely no reason to not give the young guys the reps and experience. Just put Tank and Harlod in there the first couple of games or just go with the 4 man fronts a little more.

Yeah, but I thought for sure Brooks was gone last year, too.

Forget who raised the four game suspension for weed above, but absolutely the league would do that. The whole Josh Gordon thing has essentially been over weed.

We are talking what the FO should do. What they actually do is another story.

True. At this point, I'd rather keep a guy like Lemonier, Rush, or Fanaika over Brooks. They might not be quite as good today, but at least they have some kind of upside. Brooks has been on a steady descent for three years.

Anticipate Brooks will play big in pre-season and the inclination will be to keep him. But the optimal move would be to torch all these old expensive vets and evaluate for the future. Being in Baalke's shoes though - that would be a tough move, especially as it would make his secondary look worse. He really needs the o-line and secondary to step up this year because he invested so many picks there.

I just find this crazy. I don't make 8 figures a year. I brew for Christ's sake. Yet somehow I manage to not throw everything in my life away while blaming anything that isn't me being a jackass. It's not alcohol that's the problem. It's Aldon Smith that's the problem. And it's not JUST alcohol that's his problem. Dude doesn't know how to conduct himself like a professional. Never has. Never will. Remove all substances, including weed, and he'll still find a way to screw his life up.

Unfortunately, I expect this statement to be the norm going forward. I have no faith in ownership to fix the mess they have seemingly enjoyed creating. I miss the 80s. Hell, I miss the 90s. I'd trade the late 90s for this disaster at the moment.
