SI Article Anonymous quote on Trent Baalke

Said something like he was one of the best GMs in the business and if the Yorks were dumb enough to let him go he'd be snapped up in a heartbeat. Reports are that the anonymous source had a really scratchy voice.

People can express these opinions but at the end of the day we can judge the roster Baalke has put together. He whiffed on the 2012 draft and made some poor free agent signs in recent years. We'll see how these latest drafts pan out. Pretty hard for me when looking at the roster and drafts that he is one of the best in the business.

It was clearly someone from an NFC West opponent who made this quote.

2012 was bad (sorry if I have the years wrong) but look at this:

Adam Caplan ✔ @caplannfl#Titans:2015: 2nd-traded, 3rd-waived, 5th-waived, 6th-on IR2014: 2nd-waived, 4th-waived, 6th-waived2013: 2nd-waived, (2) 3rd-waived

He's not completely horrible or anything like that but he's far from being the best in the business.

I credit him for managing the cap, acquiring draft picks, and in general drafting well on defense especially secondary.

The issues he has is that he doesn't really use the draft picks he has wisely and we really wind up with too many great back end of the roster guys and not top flight starters.

The biggest issue and where he's completely failed is drafting on offense especially the skill positions. From all the years he's drafted he has to show for on offense is basically Carlos Hyde and we've yet to see him even get a full season of work in. Kap is debatable as he did have two solid years but that was a Harbaugh pick anyways and it does look like it bodes well for the Trent Brown pick.

Aldon pick is now a negative too.

Thing is, if he was worried about his job, he did nothing in free agency to try to get immediate improvement if this season was going to be key to his job. Jed may have agreed this would be a rebuilding year. Maybe he convinced York that he can rebuild to the top in 2-3 years, though I bet they didn't expect that the Tomsula season would be so bad.

I respect Baalke for not pushing for immediate improvement even though he's on the hot seat. He's sticking to his formula, even if it costs him his job. Baalke has some real strengths. He's very good at identifying defensive talent, especially DBs, where he's one of the best in the league. He's had some luck with RBs and OL (to a degree). He's awful at the offensive skill positions. His defense has the makings of becoming very good again in the near future. He's had a lot of missed picks, but he's been great at acquiring a lot of picks, so those kind of offset. We've got to see his recent picks start coming up big, though. Now is the time. This team doesn't have to make the playoffs, but they need to be competitive.

You can't fault Baalke for Aldon. There was no indication the guy would have those kinds of problems going into it.

Well it still didn't work out.

It was the seventh pick of the draft and what did they get, one great rookie season and parts of a couple more before they let him go.

Regardless of the reasons, the team didn't yield enough productive years out of that very high pick.

And don't they do psychological screening and some teams get minders to handhold some of these emotionally volatile players.
