JOE STALEY
T, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Coach Kyle Shanahan said LT Joe Staley (leg) is targeting a Week 8 or 9 return.

Staley suffered a fractured fibula Week 2 against the Bengals and was given a 6-8 week timetable, so this falls right in that line. Rookie Justin Skule has been filling in during Staley's absence. The veteran's return will be a huge boost to a team already 5-0 and staring down a return to the playoffs.

11-5 - Twelve
10-6 - Eight (All made playoffs)
9-7 - One (2007 Minnesota Vikings - missed playoffs)
8-8 - Six (Two in 2009, one in 2015, and one in 2016)

13 teams have won the Super Bowl.

If 49ers get to 10-6, they could be the first 10-6 team (that started 5-0) to not make the playoffs.....maybe.

Since 1960, every team who has started 6-0 (and played in a 16 game season) has made the playoffs except for...

1978 Washington Redskins - 8-8 (Joe Theismann started 14 games)
2003 Minnesota Vikings - 9-7 (Daunte Culpepper started 14 games)
2009 Denver Broncos - 8-8 (Kyle Orton started 15 games)

*So, every team that has started 6-0 AND kept their original starting QB healthy for the entire season has made the playoffs (since 1960).

I've got to think the Ravens are only that high because their division has been reduced to a pile of steaming garbage.

They've been playing well. They're still really thin, though, and they definitely should have added a DB at some point in rounds two through four instead of coming away with two WRs and a punter.

Dexter Lawrence and Josh Jacobs are the only rookies with a higher grade FWIW.

Redskins RB Chris Thompson diagnosed with turf toe - out 1-3 weeks. "Likely" 3.

I've developed a strong like for that guy over time after not being as high as I probably should have been early on.

He'll (possibly) miss the following games:

vs. 49ers
@ Vikings
@ Bills

Now just to worry about McLaurin.

I'm a little irritated other teams are wheeling & dealing to get better before the trade deadline, and Niners aren't.

This reminds me of 2013 when they completely neglected the CB position, which might have been the one spot that was enough to cost 'em a SB Although Skule might be enough to fill the one glaring need on the team (RG) when everyone's back & Healthy.

Ramsey would have looked great in Red & Gold. :(

I feel the same, it’s like all those trades and signings the Seahawks made while Baalke was saying they draft and develop.

But now that RAms are down, I’d rather they get him and they don’t have picks than other teams get him. Their defense may improve but if Gurley can’t get well, they’re screwed by his and Goff’s contracts.

Well I feel at least somewhat vindicated this year, anyway. My ideal situation for the draft involved: 1) Trading back if there was a good offer and taking Burns, 2) taking Bosa (though I wrestled with Williams...), 3) taking Risner in the second (though I was torn between him and Greedy Williams). I like the player, but I don't know that I'll ever warm up to the Deebo Samuel pick.

Atop my list of concerns/arguments against Shanahan as a HC candidate was the immaturity concerns that were raised by others from his time in Washington. I thought if they were going to be an issue for him in SF it would show by year three of his tenure, and to my surprise I'm not sure we've heard a single peep of ANY immaturity concerns in regards to how he works with other people, players, or other coaches on his staff. Not sure we can count the somewhat unconfirmed stories of his frustration with Lynch as GM in with that (yet).

Furthermore, when you listen to Shanahan in interviews now a days it's striking how much better he sounds and handles questions, especially when he's pressed on something. I have been more impressed with that than just about anything else he's done, and it appears I am well on my way to being wrong about Shanahan in that regard.

Have to wait to see on all the other things but this tweet gave me a chance to address that part of it. Great, great answers to both questions. It would have been interesting to see SF media bring up some of those things that were raised about him from his Washington days because he's starting to give indications that he MIGHT be able to address those things very well and it just would have been interesting to see what kind of insight he might have been able to give on that topic. I won't hold it against him, however, because I'm still the guy that said for at least 10 years I like not giving the media too much at times in season if you don't necessarily have to.
