He's a HELL of an athlete. He's most notable for making homophobic comments that resulted in a suspension when Michael Sam was drafted. Underwent sensitivity training. Back to football. He's bounced around to a bunch of different teams. Believe it was the Dolphins that tried him at corner, which is where he could also be tried with the 49ers IMO. It's one of those shot in the dark signings due to the athletic gifts there but all I'd expect at best is a key special teamer role, if he even makes the team.

A 2013 seventh-rounder, Jones appeared in 13 games between the Browns and Texans last season. Even in talent-barren San Francisco, he'll have to fight for one of the team's final spots on the 53-man roster.

Read that Jones lead the Texans in ST tackles with 11 last season.

Re: Official 2017 Offseason Thread(prior threads merged)
Malcolm Smith is the only signing so far that's been dubious to me but would have to see how that's structured and if there are "phony" years on his deal.
Overall though I'm fine with their approach to free agency this offseason. Bring in some guys that know Shanahan and fit what Shanahan wants to do but sign them in a way that it doesn't really impact the cap long term.
It's clear that the plan is this season and next being rebuild years and right now they are getting bodies to be somewhat competitive right now.
I get the feeling that Juszczyk is really the only guy that they plan on being a long-term fixture and everyone else will be evaluated again after two years.

He has experience at tackle and guard. He's absolutely massive. He was a huge project coming into the NFL. Most know I love size and length but I didn't have him getting drafted (he wasn't). Got into a bar fight in college which hurt him. Hasn't been able to stay particularly healthy and hasn't really graded out very well in any role he's been in either.
In some ways he compares to a Trent Brown - similar questions coming into the NFL with their past, where they project for different people, weight questions, etc. - but for me personally I always thought Trent Brown had a ton of upside. I wasn't particularly fond of Bell's coming in. Could wind up as a camp name and that's it.

There's been some question what the 49ers paid him. Couple different sites had different numbers. Looks like this'll be it now:
Did 49ers overpay for Malcolm Smith?

The 49ers’ $66M combo: Shanahan and Lynch are taking the measured approach, because they can afford it

I’ve heard that Lynch and Shanahan are both making top-echelon salaries for the GM and coaching ranks (so think about $4M per for Lynch and about $7M per for Shanahan–which would be a combined financial commitment of around $66M).

Very generous of Jed to give a first-time GM that much money.
KS, I can sort of understand because there might be some demand from other clubs but nobody else was looking to hire Lynch.
Just goes to show how profitable NFL teams are. So why withhold a modest extension from Harbaugh, after he'd proved his worth? Would have been a lot cheaper for Jed to try to repair the relationship with Harbaugh and dump Baalke if it came down to keeping one or the other.

Not that I think it will but this could wind up a one year deal. Funny.

Everyone they signed seems like they are on a two-year deal which couldn't be by accident.
It appears they want to give it two years and reevaluate where they stand as a team and either pick up the option or restructure the guys they like or let them walk.

By rolling this amount over to next season, wow, we are gonna have reedic money to spend. Hopefully next year has a better free agent class.

For those that want it written in a far easier fashion to understand:
